The Album Review Club - Week #147 - (page 1942) - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

Hope it’s mild and your over it soon.

We are currently hyper about Covid as Mrs Sadds has an operation for breast cancer scheduled for next week. It’s already been postponed once so we are being more careful than ever.
Hope things go OK for your wife - best of luck to both of you.

Cold sweat down my back that’s all. I’ve had worse flus.
Hope things go well for Mrs. Sadds.

If it's Run DMC "Walk this Way" or Weird Al Yankovic "Amish Paradise" you might just get away with it.

Every other rap song can go and whistle. In fact, I'd rather listen to Roger Whittaker.

Apparently old Rog is still alive and spends his time looking after his herd of zebras in Kenya. By all accounts he's had an interesting life.

My dad loved Roger Whittaker. I’m pretty sure I have a vinyl lp of his in the attic somewhere.
He had a beautifully rich voice whether it was your taste in music or not.

So far we've had suggestions of Brel, Shatner, Neil Diamond, Aznavour, Paul Anka and Randy Newman. So I'm going to add in that at some points it sounds like the mutant offspring of Howard Keel and Louden Wainwright.

On first listen, I understand where @mancity2012_eamo is coming from in terms of vocal delivery but I think the subject matter saves it from direct comparison to some of the more redundant crooners of 70's.

It's growing on me.

My Dad liked both him and Val Doonican! but considered Roger Whittaker closer to a proper folk singer and Val more of an entertainer. Growing up I nearly got disowned by my trench coat wearing mates when pissed up one night it became apparent that I knew all the words to Paddy McGinty's Goat :-)

On second listen I can find merit in some of the storylines but I’m still struggling with his passionless delivery and the redundant orchestration which in my mind is a distraction. It adds nothing.

I think I would prefer this completely stripped down to the piano and some authentic local instrumentation.
He does this on some of the songs and is all the better for it.

Love’s Enough is a nice tune.

There are a few decent stories to listen to but for my taste I don’t regard this as folk. It is of course. American mid-west folk I guess. But it seems at times diluted by… what? ….. vaudeville? Cabaret? Stageshow? I really don’t know.

Oddly enough, the likes of Midnight Carousel which was really grating on me, the way he was ending every line on a minor note sounding slightly out of tune, is actually a real folk vibe that is sticking in my head.

I’ll stick with this and give it a chance.

He is out of tune though.
