The Album Review Club - Week #148 - (page 1953) - Sheer Heart Attack - Queen

Hmmm. Well, I am prepared to argue rather strenuously that this more melodic than either of the Cohen records that have been on the two album threads. I’d also argue that if you believe this record is “overtly” political you interpreted quite a number of the songs much differently than I did.
I wouldn't argue with you Fog, arguing about music is pointless... and rather tedious. :)

Interlude ..... I just posted this in the film thread, but thought it might be of interest to some in here:-

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Well worth a watch - I have to admit that it went a bit too weird and the quality dropped a little, but the first 40 minutes or so is a riot. The bit about the travelling salesman, attending the polka party, and the semi-fictional approach to how and when he came up with the words for the first three hits ("My Bologna", "I Love Rocky Road" and "Another One Rides The Bus") are superb set pieces. And Daniel Radcliffe absolutely nails the look.

Bizarrely, it's free on the Roku Channel - so if you have one of those little Now TV boxes, you can watch it on there without subscription.

Before anyone hits me with the "But you like Leonard Cohen" metaphoric hammer, yes, he (LC) is depressing, but his words (much) more poetic, his melodies better and better, and more instrumentation, and well, LC isn't so overtly political. There is more beauty in his words AND his melodies.

All opinions welcome on this thread - but my god that’s a load of bollocks

A great podcast with Al Yankovic.

Fair enough. I thought on this thread one could have an opinion about the album of the week without this kind of childish insult.
It's a shame to read that comment BH.
I wont be reviewing any more albums sadly.

I listened to a Roy Harper album some time ago, can't remember which one but one of his classics apparently, after reading an article in Uncut magazine. I wasn't that invested in it at the time and remember wondering what all the fuss was about. So a good opportunity to revisit this feted artist with the obligatory at least three listens...

And well, he's better than I remember and that was more of an instant reaction than one that has percolated. The first couple of tracks, minus the unnecessary monologue are a good opening to the album. Oddly, repeated listens has found me not appreciating it in more depth but becoming a little unenamoured with it. I do like acoustic music but not a big fan of Dylan, who Harper did remind me of somewhat.

There's nothing to particularly dislike here and in the background it's been perfectly acceptable but I Hate the White Man apart nothing particularly stands out for me. Although I did enjoy Hell's Angels despite the seeming incongruity of it after the rest of the album. It sounds very much of it's time but I could well imagine it forming the soundtrack in one of those programmes like Endevour which work so hard to recreate the look and sounds of eras. And I mean that as a compliment not a throwaway dismissal.

Not sure I'm going to explore Harper in any further depth but overall wasn't too bad and worth a 6.

I will remove you if that's what you really want, but I'll give you time to calm down.

All opinions on here are welcome, and I'm sure BH wasn't being personal in his comment. He's apologised and that's fair enough.

I'm quite calm Rob thanks:)

I won't be changing my mind Rob.
If I'm talking "a load of bollocks" there seems little point in carrying on.
Thanks Rob it's been fun. ( Up till now).
Please remove me. I wouldn't enjoy reviewing any more albums if there's a possibility of this kind of reaction.

What you have done Bill is to let your love for Mr Cohen cloud your judgement. I'd say let it go, our resident Hammer obviously meant no harm.
