The Album Review Club - Week #148 - (page 1953) - Sheer Heart Attack - Queen

I think yourself in particular and Foggy and Legoland have said all and I won’t waffle on for the sake of it.
I always had an 8/10 in my head for this. Thought 7 just didn’t do the pick justice.
Love;
Voice
Production
Clarity
Lyrics
Sentiment and delivery.

2 point deduction for Bonus track at the end (Hells Angels)
And the lengthy unnecessary monologue before second song.

8/10.
Yeah. The odd monologue and clapping had me thinking it was a live album at first.

I’m listening to it now and although I get the argument of it being a product of its time, I just think it’s a beautiful acoustic album. It wouldn’t matter what era it was from.
That run of songs from How Does it Feel, to East Of The Sun is just gorgeous.

This will be a chill out turn to, album for me I think.

Firstly, what a great introduction from @denislawsbackheel that was, really set the mood. And thanks for helping me discover a great album, a definite 9/10 (lost a mark for the "soiled nappy song").

Shamefully, though Roy Harper is a familiar name, it's mainly for the song that John Peel loved so much. I wouldn't have believed the Harper on this record was the one who wrote "When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease".

Just listened to it a couple of times in the car on Tidal (posh), and what first jumps out is how beautiful it sounds, gorgeous production, far more than an acoustic folk album.

I really should have investigated Roy in 1984 when Liz Frazer sang "Another Day" on that This Mortal Coil album that turned me onto Tim Buckley, but somehow I didn't. Sorry, Roy.

I try to avoid comparisons when talking about music, so I won't say who it reminds me of. It's just great songs, beautifully performed.

Are the other LPs that good ?

2nd time the wrong man has been tagged this weeek!

Can’t blame you though as there are about 400 posters with very similar names.

I've never listened to him before but thanks for the nomination, now I know I never have to listen to him again.
After one listen the phrase/expression "Kill me now" came to mind...

Depressing music, with little to feel any joy about.
Boring, I actually went to sleep part way through.
I Hate The White Man.....ok, just the same melody over and over and the same 3 chords D Major, F Sharp & B Minor over and over. Dialogue before made me sleepy, please don't tell me how to think Roy !
Al Stewart would've developed this "song" much better.

Before anyone hits me with the "But you like Leonard Cohen" metaphoric hammer, yes, he (LC) is depressing, but his words (much) more poetic, his melodies better and better, and more instrumentation, and well, LC isn't so overtly political. There is more beauty in his words AND his melodies.

Man with acoustic guitar ? Give me Donovan any day.... Another Day sounds very inspired by Hurdy Gurdy Man, even in the vocal delivery.

Sorry, he's not for me. 3/10 (Another Day raised it from a 2)

Hmmm. Well, I am prepared to argue rather strenuously that this more melodic than either of the Cohen records that have been on the two album threads. I’d also argue that if you believe this record is “overtly” political you interpreted quite a number of the songs much differently than I did.
