The Album Review Club - Week #148 - (page 1953) - Sheer Heart Attack - Queen

I personally respect Bob Seger but for whatever reason simply cannot stand his music. I don't know what about it turns me off so much. I guess it just sounds so, I don't know, journeyman generic? I mean Bryan Adams was generic, but he at least had hooks (like many Canadians). Matthews, on the other hand, is basically the Gen X version of Jimmy Buffett -- music for college fraternity bros but (crucially) without a sense of humo(u)r at ALL (unlike Buffett).

Tell me about hooks.

(no sarcasm or flippancy in that btw)

BS early stuff Is really good and his mid period ok ,far better than BA in my opinion.
Not sure about DM being compared to JB but in fairness I’ve only heard ‘ Margaritavile’.It’s the instrumentation I really like about The DM band’ I’ve seen them live a couple of times in small venues and they were excellent.

Oh BS v BA you’d take BS theoretically every time in terms of craft, but for whatever reason BA just — I don’t know — sounds better. It’s weird. For the DM/JB comparison it’s really the audience — over here at least. JB was a cult artist for Boomer frat boys; DM for Gen X; neither I think have much to say nor offer musically IMO.

I’ve seen Bryan Adams live five times - three of them in a few weeks on the Into The Fire tour in 1987, once at Maine Road in 1992.

That album was superb, a departure from his general rock stuff, and he is a fantastic live act. The only problem is he hasn’t made a decent album since then, and 35 years is a long time!

I saw him live too back in the 80s and he was really good. Plus a lot of attractive young women liked him and went to his show too, so . . . .

Well, it’s hard. A hook is a riff that rings your chimes. On God Save The Queen by the Pistols e.g. Or the piano on Vanessa Carlton’s A Thousand Miles. Like that.

So hooks for you might not be hooks for me and vice-versa?

Shit, another leaving before my next nomination tomorrow.
As the saying goes ‘One mans meat is another man’s poison’.
We all have different opinions , unfortunately BH response was about’ as subtle as a flying mallet’.
I’ve not done my review of this album yet, but I agree LC pisses on RH.

So...Roy Harper.

I prefer Stormcock. Which I've just bought on vinyl. That's not to say that I don't like this offering though. It is in parts soothing, weird, lovely and altogether gorgeous.

As most of you will gather by now I'm a big 'voice' person. Which is why Dylan is a turn off for all of his great songwriting/ playing skills. I like Mr Harper's voice. I also like his playing, it's quite lovely.

A couple of songs don't hit the mark and the less said about the last one the better but as a whole I've enjoyed it.

7/10

Thanks OP. Great choice and always nice to add a new artist to my vinyl collection.
