The Album Review Club - Week #195 (page 1310) - A New World Record - ELO

Very slow in getting round to this but finally downloaded Spotify to my phone..i shall try and catch up and comment later this week
 
Got round to listening to Steve Forbert.
Did nothing for me which I found strange.I usually find something in this type of sound.
 
Do we get half a point if we guess which poster nominated James McMurty, without guessing the specific song?

Imo it is not as good as their previous/debut album 'til the stream runs dry' and I'd recommend that mote, but both have plenty to like.

Cheers. I did play this on holiday, everyone but Mrs Spires was a fan. Caused some consternation cause they couldn't pigeon hole it :-) Quite different from their first in some ways, but both very decent.

Initial kudos to:

The comrade :-) who picked Latin Quarter, saw them more than once back in the day and even their politically dated songs still have some punch to them. For personal reasons my favourite has always been No Rope as Long as Time.

The Be Good Tanyas pick. Such a shame they don't seem to do anything these days.

I Should've Known. I had a Till Tuesday album which I was a bit lukewarm on but when I bought Whatever and this came on as the first track you knew her solo career was going to be good.

The (very) acceptable face of prog in the form of King Crimson :-) They don't get enough of an outing in these parts.

The acceptable face of Zappa too! Every one else in the world loves Willie The Pimp but I can't be arsed with it whereas this track gets in and out tout suite, top choice.

As someone has already said Kiki Dee, great voice - not too many people from Bradford end up on Tamla!

The Handsome family - what's not to love about a husband and wife who like to sing the odd murder ballad.

In fact I'm not sure there's actually a duffer on here at all and there's been a few I've not heard before who I've really enjoyed. It's a really fun playlist, well done us!

Having listened a few times now just a few additions to my initial thoughts, which all stand.

Hats off to whoever chose Kiki Dee, it was an inspired choice. I took no notice of this song as a nipper and hadn't heard it for donkey's years. It's great.

I have no recollection of The Rat from the time, which is a shame cause I really enjoyed it on this list.

Some lyrically strong entries, James McMurty, Family of the Year, Off with Their Heads. Can't be doing with Joe Walsh's voice but the lyric is fun.

Family of the Year in particular was a strong entry for me. Liked Kevin Morby more than some did. The Welshly Arms is the more poppy end of blues rock but still enjoyable.

TRex and Marley both good tracks but slightly blighted by the fact there are others of their I much prefer.

Three of a Perfect Pair has made me have a think about which era KC I prefer and it might actually be this one rather than early incarnations.

For a supposedly Manchester band obsessed forum, there's a very US bias to the list ;-)

Haven't ended up skipping any of them, even the three I was less than enamoured with (which at only 10% of the playlist is a result anyway).

Of my top 10, 5 were very familiar to me and 5 weren't which from my perspective was a nice mix. Most enjoyable playlist yet.

Guessing is going to be borderline impossible so I'll have a go but it'll have to be pretty perfunctory when there's so many of them. A few songs like The Hu, Avishai Cohen and In Tua Nua lend themselves to a fairly small subset of candidates but apart from that it's a bit of a crap shoot. I do reckon Foggy is being framed with Latto though.

Thanks, Zappa and Hu have just made me spit my coffee on myself!

Despite his encyclopaedic knowledge, I'm struggling with the idea that Foggy has ever heard of Steve Skaith/Latin Quarter so this is making me a bit suspicious.

Guessing is going to a be a thankless task but the good thing is I think there's going to be something I liked from pretty much everyone.

I don't think Fog picked Joe Walsh , Off With Their Heads or Latto , as these are too palpable given past choices of his and his posts on this thread to date.

I think he has been far more cabbalistic on this occasion to maximise his chances of another subjugation.
