That was the worst episode of all 6 seasons.

Its like the BBC told them to write an extra episode at the last minute and they thought "let's just do a 45 minute exposition in the form of the interviews people used to like".

I was watching Community and they referred to a episode being a "bottle" episode. I had to look it up and think it is an episode where it is shot on the cheap to save budget. Perhaps it was something like that.

Why is he in trouble anyway?

He's supposedly addicted to an over the counter painkillers - codeine/cocodomol. We saw him going to lots of different pharmacies to get around the limit on how many you can buy.

Over. The. Counter.

ie a drug you're allowed to take. Drug tests don't test how much of a drug you're taking, so all it would do is alert them that he's taking a legal over the counter painkiller.

yeah, I don't really get this element of the storyline. Almost set up for a "he knows he's on the outs so gets his bucket list done in 5 days" kind of deal. All over some painkillers when he knew he'd be tested and could have just not taken any that morning...

No clue what that episode was really about or tried to acheive other than confusing the story and giving it an extra episode. The whole Steve / pain killer thread is utterly pointless, the car chase and arresting of Kate made no sense what so ever and the whole interview with Jo was just so mixed up.

Really enjoyed the series up to that episode so hopefully e7 pulls it right back up to standard.

Codeine can be detected in your system for 48hrs, long time to go without for someone with an addiction. We have seen him try to swap to alcohol and he didn't last the evening.

at the end of the day its Codeine. Unless he's taking something they ain't showing I don't really see the point of it apart from create some desperation with him and Hastings both having an artificial deadline to crack the case and save their jobs.
