Wigan brought thousands when we won 1-0 in the Cup in the 1970`s.King Colin got the only goal but they scared the shit out of us, as they were a non league in those days.I remember seeing them play Winsford United on numerous occasions when they were in the old Cheshire League !!
This is the one I was going to mention, they estimated 15k Wiganers turned out that day, the attendance was 46k.
More than they took to Wembley!

What's the biggest we've taken away?

Surely York's gotta be up there?

Excluding cup finals/semis, it would be

Blackburn 2000
Notts County 1985
Stoke 1987
Stoke '87 is a much forgotten one DD, most Blues more readily remembering the following season's fancy dress bonanza, but I remember it very well.

I particularly remember an Ian Brghtwell looping header to secure the points. You are correct that we took an enormous following that day to the Victoria Ground, accounting for half the 18,000 crowd I would say.

Surely Trevor Francis' debut has to rival it for numbers?

I meant the fancy dress one, gdm. I didn't go to the one you mean. I seem to remember there were 13,000 city at that one, and the same at notts county. We had 14,000 at old Trafford in the cup in the 80s too. Blackburn rovers estimated 18,000 city in the stadium for that one so that probably takes it.

My dad tells me there used to be 20,000 city at old Trafford when it was pay on the door in the 60s.

Talking of big crowds let us have a look at Maine Road 1985 - I wonder how many Charlton brought with them.

Really, 20,000 to derby's at that kip? United wouldn't admit to that obviously!

I remember us out numbering the Rags in the youth cup final at The swamp.

We also took a fair few to West Ham in 87 but Stoke was the biggest

Biggest away following for me was Sunderland

City away following - this must rank up there with any . Mentioned previously in another thread that in 1934 FA Cup
after a 2-2 draw at Maine Road City travelled to Hillsborough for a replay -ON a Wednesday afternoon -

Key facts Club: Sheffield Wednesday FC | Opening: 1899 | Capacity: 39732 seats ... Hillsborough achieved its record attendance in 1934 when 72,841 people ...
Estimated 35,000 City fans went over the Pennines. All in flat caps??.

There was one game where we played at home but was the away side in the fa cup, Newcastle had rioted on the pitch against notts forest at st James park, a game they won but had to play their next game away, so they drew city and to me it was the biggest following outside a derby they were all over the kippax and around the ground, we lost 2 nil if I can recollect right.

Yep was 2-0 to the Geordies.....A few City waited in the carpark for them to come out and soon fucked off as thousands poured down the Kippax steps. I was off sharpish!

Everton away in the Cup in 81 hasn't been mentioned as a big away following for us. Must have been 14k City there that day and I was fucking glad of the escort at the end!

Leeds (twice in the FA Cup) as well where we took a similar amount....

Some of the comments in the Chelsea threads have inspired this! so what do you think has been the largest away following you've seen at City? Obviously these game's will have been at Maine Road rather than the Etihad for the majority of us. Apart from the obvious fixtures against the Rags Sunderland at the end of the 1990/91 seasom springs to mind for me.

Unofficially I reckon the 2-2 1973 FA Cup tie against Sunderland. I was in the Kippax with my Dad and couldn't breathe !
When we attacked each end, the whole crowd had to turn in unison. The atmosphere was awesome. When Sunderland scored their accent was deafening.
I was in the Gents at the back of the Kippax before the game and Sunderland fans were climbing in over the wall.

Happy pre credit-card-turnstile days, when I was a lad.
