The biggest away following at City?

Wigan brought thousands when we won 1-0 in the Cup in the 1970`s.King Colin got the only goal but they scared the shit out of us, as they were a non league in those days.I remember seeing them play Winsford United on numerous occasions when they were in the old Cheshire League !!
This is the one I was going to mention, they estimated 15k Wiganers turned out that day, the attendance was 46k.

I don't suppose any of them were the most ever but all three teams who got promoted in 83/84 had both the Platt Lane and the corner of The Kippax rammed. Sheff Wed, Newcastle and Chelsea.

I remember talking to some Chelsea at Fulham that year and they reckoned they would have brought at least another 5,000 if the game hadn't been moved to a Friday.

Pretty sure we lost all three of those games too.

Don't want to sound disrespectful mate, but this isn't true. The Platt Lane was first given to away fans, season 1985/86. Up until that season, fans were only given "the cage", the strip at the side of the kippax and the adjoining corner. Wednesday had about 20-30 lads in the Platt Lane but on being sussed, they stood up and left(under police protection) peacefully. Neither Newcastle, nor Chelsea, had fans in the Platt Lane that season. Was anyone in the Kippax that season, when a mass missile throwing, free for all, (outside segregation at half time) with the geordies kicked off? I tell you, their tarmac must o' been looser than ours, coz we deffo came worst off.

Well I'm quite pleased with myself that I remembered those games at all so forgetting who was in The Platt Lane is a small side issue I can live with.

One thing I do remember for ( probably ) certain is City were all over town looking for Sheff Wed and the police got their trains to drop them at that tiny station at Belle Vue and marched them in all the way from there.

Was a regular police tactic as I remember us going to Newcastle and the train ending up at some small station in the middle of no where. Also got bussed in from Edge Hill a few times rather than letting us carry on to Lime St.

I always remember Chelsea coming in the European Cupwinners Cup. I think it was a semi in the early 70s. They were everywhere that night.
Thousands of them in the kippax!
Yes the Kippax was a war zone that night.

They were after the pies. Loads of them came down for that one and they worried us on the field as well.

-- Mon Feb 17, 2014 3:10 pm --

But the old derbies when the Kippax was half n half must have been the biggest!

All three of those teams brought what was then huge followings. I certainly remember the missile throwing although I am not sure City cam off worse as we had all the rubble to throw from the banks.
