The Bluemoon Song Cup 2023

"Age of Consent" obviously, still remember Peel playing that 40 years ago and being mesmerised.

Saying that, I heard a stripped down cover of "Mr Brightside" at a gig in Glasgow that was better than the Killers; I can't imagine anyone being able to cover New Order.

The comments on Mr. Brightside (save the "overplayed" one) seem a bit churlish -- it's a good tune by a good band off an album which, like Pearl Jam's 10, is half excellent and half mediocre.

However, it's up against my favo(u)rite band, off my favo(u)rite record, with a stone cold iconic number. Hasta la vista, Los Killers.

Tend to agree that it's hard -- I've heard a LOT of covers of their stuff. The only really interesting ones tend to be by amateurs.

Check the following out on YouTube: some guy used an Ipad to replicate "Leave Me Alone" which I liked, some kids from somewhere in Asia did a redo of "Perfect Kiss" that's okay; there's an accapela version of "Temptation" by some amateur singers in Canada that I thought was a nice turn on that song, and then that cover of "Blue Monday" by that weird band that does only instruments from the 1800s or whatever.

The best (arguably only good) thing Radiohead ever did was a semi-credible cover of "Ceremony."

I don't understand the popularity of The Killers. The debut album by The Bravery released in the same year was far superior to "Hot Fuss" but vanished without trace.
Watched The Killers at a V Festival in Weston Park in the mid 00s to see what all the fuss was about and thought they were average at best.
Meanwhile, NO are one of my favourite bands & "Age of Consent" amongst their best material. Shame it was never released as a single, but it was during their obtuse "no singles on albums" phase.
Anyway, AOC is the clear winner here.

I was at that too and had been told The Killers were brilliant live but was also rather underwhelmed. Though it seemed to be viewed as a bit naff in comparison to other festivals I used to quite like the V Festival, it wasn't too big but in its heyday attracted a decent eclectic mix of acts.

I liked it as it was local so could nip home on the shuttle buses & have a night in my own bed between the Saturday and Sunday shows.
Stopped going when the lineup got taken over by mainstream pop acts.
