The Bluemoon Song Cup 2023

What a song by Mr Rafferty. Not heard that in ages. great tune. Don't mind the Petty one either but it won't beat Gerry.

Did no one put Baker Street up? Just for the guitar solo...which is one of the best.
Brilliant!
Bob Holness would be proud of you…

I know many lauded it, but his career nosedived for me personally when he got involved with the Wilburys. Both he (and The Heartbreakers too) lost their edge afterwards. Became too middle of the road.

You have to remember, that for their first two albums they were marketed as New Wave, and called such in the media. The albums after those certainly lost the rough edges, and became more polished and produced.
But post Wilbury stuff like Free Fallin etc bored me to tears.

Cannot beat those early albums though. Class.

So TP&THB over Rafferty for me. With ease.
I think there is some truth to this. The Cars were marketed as "new wave" too. I like the first 8 records with the HBs better than his solo stuff (which have some good songs but don't stand up as well as his HB albums IMO) and certainly better than the Wilburys. But honestly who could gainsay him hanging with rock royalty? And don't forget this was a guy who sued his own record company to keep prices for his records to his fans down. He did enough good stuff in music that to me he was fine to wander off into the sunset and do his own thing(s), conventional and edgeless or no.

I loved TP’s music, start to finish. TP& HB, always one of the great live bands.

That’s the most impossible one so far! My favourite Tom Petty track too. I mean I just had to vote for Gerry because that song, that playing, that singing, that production, is just sublime. But Refugee is brilliant. Awful to see them pitched against each other.

Now there's a blast from the past, used to have the single...dont know where it is so off to youtube later.

I like his individual songs start to finish. If I pick my top 40 they range equally from all parts of his career. But for the individual records overall -- I agree with @MCFCTrick -- I think were better with the HBs.
Generally prefer him with the Heartbreakers, who are one of the great rock n roll bands, and the earlier stuff but "Wildflowers" album is very popular in our household and he is just one of my most favoured artists.
