The Bluemoon Song Cup 2023

....and that, ladies and gentlemen, is a perfect example of the dubious standard of the voting so far, and why dross like massive attack, soft cell and Kate Bush to name but three are through yet true classics have ignominiously fallen by the wayside.
Massive Attack dross? What are you into, Poison and Queen?

That's kind of what I was getting at.

When you see the match threads, and the musical tastes of the BM population, you have to worry about the future of mankind.

You are essentially the mod equivalent of Glenda Hoddle when he was England manager, pointing out how shit we all are!

Well, Massive Attack beat one Kate Bush song, so there’s that.

Other than “Kashmir” I can’t think of a “classic” that got upset last round. Clearly the group dislikes “Something” relative to other Beatles’ tunes and “Shine On” doesn’t count — never been a “classic” compared to the rest of the PF catalog objectively-speaking.

I submitted one “classic” I like and four other songs I like under the strictures of the categories and frankly I’m shocked I even have one that’s made it this far. Had I at all cared to “win” I could have Manc’d or classic-ed all five of my entries.

Surprised dry your eyes isn't in

Well if you can't recognize Something, Kashmir, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond as classics then I truly despair. You excuse the loss of Something as "the group dislikes" whilst I lambast it as simply appalling taste.
All three of these are way better than Massive Attack, recorded by true musicians at the peak of their craft, as opposed to MA's mediocre producers/DJs.
I can guarantee that the songs that carry on being discovered and enjoyed by future generations will not be by Massive Attack and Soft Cell.

It’s a CUP. Every match-up is discrete. “Something” losing wasn’t an upset. It’s clear many don’t like it that much, and it’s certainly not a song I put on for pleasure. But I do Kashmir, and Physical Graffiti. As is do the whole album of WYWH.

That said — Re Shine: Money, Breathe, Time, WYWH, Cigar, Machine, C Numb, Run Like Hell, Brick — all more important, influential, radio-friendly (objective) and — here comes the subjective part — IMO better PF tunes. And that’s just off the top of my head.

Ah come on NZ, I've enjoyed your defense of classic rock but we're entering into old man yells at cloud territory now :-) I think you're partially right about where the lions share of future classics will come from for a least a certain demographic but more for the reasons that Hilts said around what is now a much more disposable culture and crowded marketplace than earlier decades. But beyond that there are kids everywhere who will never even become familiar with the names of some of the bands that were are talking about here. They have their own heroes and classics that don't come from the rock genre and enjoy what are probably alien forms of music to you and me. I was listening to one of my son's friends talking extensively and passionately about different forms of rap and I had next to no idea what he was on about but I could tell his opinions were thought through and I imagine he could argue his case as cogently as you and I could about the things we like. Rock makes up an ever dwindling percentage of music consumed around the world (though I would agree classic rock is holding its end up).I'm all for a bit of raging against the dying of the light but we should celebrate that younger generations don't want to live in a cultural museum and that they want to create their own thing and that might involve using something made by Technics rather than Fender. My eldest will probably be keeping the guitar light burning his entire life and his mates admire that but equally he respects what they can do with some of the technology cheaply available today. Be a sad world when younger generations no longer want to make their own different cultural mark.

I suspect if more people thought of them as true classics, then they would have progressed.
