The Bluemoon Song Cup 2023

by a distance is pushing it in the jams case
would be interested in what you think is head and shoulders above it
Music is always subjective, no opinion is right or wrong?
I just don't like that song.
IMHO the Beatles are pants, one of the worst bands I've ever heard, and to my knowledge, I've yet to hear a cover that isn't better than the original, yet most people think they're great?
I'm sure (I know) bands I think are great, others wouldn't listen to, each to their own ;)

I think the Jam are overrated, and in many respects what I mean by this is Paul Weller is overrated (I like Foxton). I mean I like them, and I like the song in question, but I’ve never found their hooks that hooky nor their melodies that melodic. Good energy and great lyrics — in the early, punkier part of their career — I’ll give you.

The Beatles are the greatest band in history because they were the most influential and wrote dozens of great songs. But do I listen to them by choice any more? Never. Granted I still enjoy some tracks from The White Album and Abbey Road and I still love “A Day In The Life” when I hear them. But given an effectively infinite option set, I’d rather hear something that I haven’t heard a thousand times before.

One of the two songs that The Jam didn't release officially as a single, but still made the UK top 40 single charts, which was the other one
Didn’t know that mate. How did it qualify for the singles chart then?
Can an import single make it??

As to your question, no idea, I’ll take a guess at The Bitterest Pill

Were you listening to radio2 TOTP today at 1pm perchance

You are very correct about an import single, seems record companies in each country chose what to release as singles and I think That's Entertainment came from Germany.

Although never released as a domestic single in the UK during the band's lifetime, "That's Entertainment" nonetheless charted as an import single (backed by a live version of "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight"), peaking at No. 21.

Loved Setting Sons, otherwise found the Jam ok but not great. Not a huge Oasis fan at all but DLBIA has the the edge in this one.
