The Boxing thread

I think you're being a bit harsh there. It was a close fight. I wanted Kovalev to knock him out personally but Ward did do well to get himself back into it, especially over the second half. Corruption might have been the reason for Ward getting the nod but i still don't think anyone can argue too much with either man winning. Tricky fight to score.

Nothing close about that Kovalev won by around 6 rounds. People will just stop watching.

Having watched the early rounds tonight it was doing my head in how many times Kovalev wanted to wrestle and wrench Wards neck, watch how many headlocks he goes for. Is that deliberate to slow his head movement for the shots that came later in those rounds? I don't like to see too much of that, clinching is fine no wresting moves though. Ward noticed it and gave him some of his own medicine after that and got a warning straight away but the ref should have been on top of it sooner.

Ward needs to have more fights you could see the advantage Kovalev gained early on from his active schedule but as the fight went on Ward got more comfortable, seemed obvious he has more in his arsenal than Kovalev does for me, personally I don't agree with just looking for the biggest punches(he's skillful, great jab, I wouldn't say he has any big weaknesses just Ward is a cut above in more areas than Kovalev has over ward). The knock down wasn't a heavy one so I don't think it was a case of Kovalev letting him off the hook, he was showing everything he had early and it was working for a time. In the rematch the only way I see Kovalev winning is a knockout(he can clearly hurt him and he should go for it early) if it goes 12 rounds Ward just has too much for him to think about and now he and his team will know what was working for him watching it back.

Still for this fight with the knockdown I think a draw would have been the fairest result, possibly even Kovalev by a round, tricky to call some of those rounds though so I don't think it was quite a robbery even if I don't agree with the decision.

Try watching again as Ward led with his head as much as he did his left.

Voomer some people and judges thinks because you consitantly come forward and pressure a fighter you should get the round. You still need to throw the landing punches. Some great defensive fighters out there. Ward is 1 of those. He has it all for me can box off the back foot brilliant the best in the business for me and can score well with his counter punching.

Tonight Katie Taylor starts hope she does well. Be good to see a Matchroom card back in Dublin with her headlining the bill with a stacked card. The likes of Jono Carroll , Tommy McCarthy and get Michael Conlan and hopefully Jason Quigley it would sell out big time as at 1 stage all were fighting in the HIgh Preformance team for years together.

Still think Krusher nicked it but thought the scoring was poor all night. Good luck turbo, really looking forward to Lomachenko later, a brilliant boxer and a master of his trade.

I'm sure Selby would love a crack at Lomachenko, but for me he's the best out there. Apart from the fight with Salido that he lost on a split, VL has looked the buisness. I like Selby but his chins suspect, i think his brother will be better.

Disappointed with Cruz expected more from him but as expected Terry was to big and strong, feel sorry for Terry as nobody wants to fight him they just want to spoil the fights and also he needs Warren to deliver but I'm sorry Luke Campbell is not a big fight for a world champion hopefully Turbo gets a shot at a proper champion like Linares.

Turbo missed out on the Crolla fight that should of been made. I think he beats Linares if it happens but that was Terrys biggest pay day which is now gone. I think if Luke Cmpbell wins a world title then that could be a fight for Terry and may well be Terrys hardest fight in my opinion.

As for the Katie Taylor fight on Sky she can bang and box well. Honestly think she is good for female boxing she deserves everything she gets even if she doesnt win a World title she will go down as a icon in female boxing. She impressed me big time at the weekend give her another 2 fights and she will be winning a World title for me. She just needs to plant the feet a little bit more to get the power punches going and hurting people. For Irish boxing Hearn is onto a good thing with Katie. She is easy to market over here. We could fill out the 3 Arena in Dublin if there is a strong card on her show and i for 1 will be going out there to watch any fight in Dublin.

I'm sure I read a while back that Warren offered Linares more money to fight Turbo than he got for fighting Crolla. Can see Turbo moving up if he doesn't get the unifications soon

The Haye vs Bellew press conference offered up the expected entertainment... I don't mind the digs Haye is getting in against smugface Hearn(still prefer him over Warren though) but he is coming across so bitter at times, he's as much a money grabber and attention seeker as anyone. Much prefer Haye over Bellew but if he doesn't sort his attitude out he's going to come across just like Bellew does; a loud mouth bully who everyone wants to see knocked out.

Felt sorry for Adam Smith, he looked like Stan Laurel sat in the middle. Haye needs to keep his cool and i'm sure Shane will have a word. For me, Bellew lacks discipline in the ring and will want to trade early, i think Haye wins inside four. Just got 3 months of name calling now, it's pathetic but part of selling tickets.

Haye wont get done for that he could say that he was defending himself as Bellew pushed him. I seen a bit from Haye and he is right in having a go at Eddie Hearn he is taking the limelight away from his fighters. This has happend before in the build up to the Quigg v Frampton fight and that was other bullshit from Hearn and Joe Gallacher at the time. Now i see the same thing happening again with this 1 with Hearrn , Bellew and to some extent Dave Cadwell all getting digs in. I dont mind Haye or Bellew but Bellew since winnng the World title has gone on to a new high of being a fucking fool. I just dont see Bellew doing much when Haye lands its all over. Also Haye is on the money about Hearn not looking after his fighters putting them in mis match fights. Something Barry Hearn would never do but Eddie has form for it now.
I hope when the Matchroom sky deal run out they open up the dates to other promotors i think Matchroom has done well with Sky money just would love to see Sky approaching Mick Hennessy and a few other promotors about fights.
