Having watched the early rounds tonight it was doing my head in how many times Kovalev wanted to wrestle and wrench Wards neck, watch how many headlocks he goes for. Is that deliberate to slow his head movement for the shots that came later in those rounds? I don't like to see too much of that, clinching is fine no wresting moves though. Ward noticed it and gave him some of his own medicine after that and got a warning straight away but the ref should have been on top of it sooner.
Ward needs to have more fights you could see the advantage Kovalev gained early on from his active schedule but as the fight went on Ward got more comfortable, seemed obvious he has more in his arsenal than Kovalev does for me, personally I don't agree with just looking for the biggest punches(he's skillful, great jab, I wouldn't say he has any big weaknesses just Ward is a cut above in more areas than Kovalev has over ward). The knock down wasn't a heavy one so I don't think it was a case of Kovalev letting him off the hook, he was showing everything he had early and it was working for a time. In the rematch the only way I see Kovalev winning is a knockout(he can clearly hurt him and he should go for it early) if it goes 12 rounds Ward just has too much for him to think about and now he and his team will know what was working for him watching it back.
Still for this fight with the knockdown I think a draw would have been the fairest result, possibly even Kovalev by a round, tricky to call some of those rounds though so I don't think it was quite a robbery even if I don't agree with the decision.
