The Boxing thread

A little bit of romanticism their mate, there were more super fights back then, due to their only being WBA and WBC belts, but they also fought enough chumps themselves. For example Hagler had around 60 fights before he fought any of the other big 4.

I suppose. But the fights do seems to "be picked" for money reasons these days.
I forgot the panamanian guy. What was his name ?

All hard as fucking nails and none scared to step in the ring with each other. Respect.

That's ^ not the way Marvin see's it, slags leonard at any opportunity because of how he was golden bolloxed to the top. Leonards brother was a better boxer though he had a bit of a temper, one of the nieghbours pit bulls ate his mothers toy dog....so he killed the pit...and the owner...end of career.

Hands of Stone - Roberto Duran. Hands of Stone is also the title of his book, a good read as is 4 kings which is about the 4 of them.

Boxing has always been about money, and dodgy fights have littered the history of the sport. However 4 world belts (and a load of even shitter ones) now has diluted the product too far and thats its major problem

Very true, Hagler was ducked by everyone for so long, he was a genuinely the best in the middleweight division (the others all started at lower weights) and Marvin was also a southpaw, nobody wanted to fight him.

Leonard was a millionaire before throwing a punch as a pro if I recall correctly and only agreed to fight Hagler when he was on the wane, Hagler wanted him so bad, he gave away all sorts of concessions as well, 12 rounds instead of 15, big gloves, big ring. Leonard did nothing in virtually every round bar the last 20 seconds and sneaked the win.

Marvin lives in Italy now, in a silk dressing gown all day with his model wife, he did ok so we shouldnt feel too bad for him.

Duran didnt like Leonard either, and Hearns was ahead in their first fight and was robbed in their second fight was quite bitter about the attention Leonard received.

Aye. Plus a heavy weight division with no real talent.

...and you really don't think that the promoters are in control of boxing at world-title level? Promoters and boxing federations are probably more corrupt than UEFA.
Yeah probably but Brook fighting bums isn't because Hearn wants him to. It's a necessary evil to keep his belt because without it, none of the big names will be overly keen on fighting him.

I hope Blackwell is OK when they bring him round, we all know what happened when his dad fought Michael Watson,
fwiw, I think the ref or his corner should have stopped the fight in the 7th.

Brutal fight last night and hope Nick makes a full recovery. I'm glad the ref got the doctor to check the eye and stopped the fight, some refs & cornermen would of been happy to let that go on longer. Enzo Maccarinelli fought Braehmer a couple of years ago in Germany, without doubt the worst swelling around the eye i've seen in boxing. He also had Gary Lockett in his corner and despite repeated requests from Gary, Enzo refused to quit and boxed on for several more rounds. It can be a tough call to get your man out, but there's time you need to pull rank, regardless of what the fighter or public want. You can always get another shot, speedy recovery 'Bang Bang'.

yep amazed he did not stop it

Blackwell is some warrior no doubt but the ref should have protected him when that huge onslaught came

the upper cuts were banging his head back all night long

I wish him well

Away in Athens so missed the boxing. SAD to hear about Nick hopefully he pulls through. Also the Kell fight he needs to fight mandatories to keep his belt. Needs to fight either Keith Thurman or Danny Garcia. Love to see him fighting in the US next time out get him in with either of those 2 guys be good. Also Jesse Vargas and Errol Spence Jnr would be good fights like what I have seen from Errol Spence Jnr so far.

The fights are coming thick and fast at the moment some good fights this coming month.

Boxing ain't yoga, it is a very serious sport.

I think the rewards are not worth the risk (in the sense the blows to the head will either reduce your life significantly or kill you)

We have to agree, It's a very barbaric sport for the 21st century and I'm shocked it isn't outlawed tbh. Especially in this day and age when you get health and safety people going crazy about fecking heading the ball in football !

Sadly it takes something like poor Nick Blackwell's injury for people to see the dangers.

Thing is mate, people forget how much good boxing does away from the sport. There's times i've felt like a social worker with some of the kids we've had through, their backgrounds have been horrendous. Boxing has kept a lot of them off the streets and out of trouble, taught them discipline and self respect. I've even liased with teachers over the years to get kids back in school, through boxing. I've heard a few people call for it to be banned since Saturday so just having a moan.
