The Boxing thread

Gary Russell Jnr looks good and strong and quick hands will cause a lot of fighters problems. I liked the US card on Sky. Thought SMith done well but the knock down took it out of him in the final rounds. As for a Lee Selby v Gary Russell Jnr I would avoid it for as long as possible. Selby has the option of 2 money fights. I agree take the Josh Warrington fight. Then if Frampton beats Santa Cruz go for that fight too as Selby is the 1 I feel has it all boxing wise. Only thing lets him down is his power not as powerful as others in the division.

Errol Spence Jnr he is some talent I think he gets better and better in every fight I see him fighting. As for Kell Brook he needs a big fight sooner rather than later. The Khan fight will never ever happen in my mind. Khan doesnt want it at all. I think the time is coming that Khan if he gets beaten he will retire no matter what just dont think Khan thinks Kell is worthy of the fight sadly. I would love to see Kell fighting Danny Garcia in a unification fight if possible then Thurman then go for Spence Jnr keep him waiting for the shot.

I'd love to see Brook v Garcia
2 big solid study lads who can both bang a bit
One of the ones I really want to see
Both undefeated also

Brook annoys the fuck out of me. Spends all his time dissing Khan yet fights absolute fucking nobodies.

36 fights with one decent opponent doesn't give you the right to badmouth somebody like Khan whose resume is liberally sprinkled with big names.

Hope Brook proves me wrong but I fully expect him to sidestep Spence and move up to 154 to fight for a "world title" v Liam Smith who's probably about the 35th best light mid in the world

It would be such a shame for Khan and Brook to miss fighting each other.

I agree, he will almost definitely avoid Spence. He will vacate to fight Khan i reckon. And then he will take on a weak belt holder, win that and defend against mandatories and voluntaries. I'd love to be proved wrong, but i can't see him being let off his leash by Hearn, because the upper echelon of the division is very strong - with Spence and Thurman probably having more than enough to beat him.

The thing with Brook is that he believes that being a world champion is enough to call the shots.

In theory it should be. However, there are that many world champions and stupid titles such as the WBC 'super' champion that makes the title itself is irrelevant in creating a huge fight.

Boxers need world titles to make a name for themselves. Once they are established, the governing bodies need them.

I remember Mayweather refusing to pay the commission to the governing body for the title shot so fought his opponent in a non-title fight. The fight still made him tens, if not hundreds, of millions.

When you look at Brooks record then it is a joke that he has got away with fighting nobodies for as long as he has. I'm no fan of Khan but he is right in saying that he is the bigger draw in any potential fight with Kell.

What Brook needs to do is put some real pressure on Khan. Being a champion means nothing when Khan is already a former 2 weight world champion and realistically could have his pick of title fights. His name and reputation alone has got him this fight with Canelo.

Go out there and destroy Garcia and then he will have something bigger to bring to the table. He will have destroyed the guy who destroyed Khan. Knocking Khan's ego down a peg or two will get him the fight, not unsuccessfully trying to claim that he is the bigger draw.

I totally agree mate. He wants to call the shots by claiming he is the 'champ' etc, which is fair enough, but then he keeps fighting the Jo Jo Dan's of this world and the Carson Jones'. He has still only beaten Shawn Porter, and even that could possibly have gone the other way (although i personally had Brook nicking it). Beating Bizier and Jo Jo Dan does not put pressure on Khan, especially when Khan is stepping up to the plate by challenging Canelo.

I'm not massively into Khan but he's got a set of bollocks on him. He'll fight practically anybody and he goes out on his shield when he does, win or lose.

I'd have thought that if Brook were to destroy Garcia (hypothetically), then Khan would be less likely to fight him than more likely.

Would love to be proved wrong as I would favour Brook vs both.

It depends. I always subscribed to the idea that Khan wanted Brook as a fall back option for if he lost to Mayweather, Pacquiao or now, Canelo. That way he can make good money and still have the big money fight to fall back on. I don't think Khan is bothered by Brook or afraid of him, especially not since he is fighting Alvarez. But, it might lead to Brook believing he is the undisputed A side to the fight, which might make negotiations difficult.

For the record, i would also favour Brook to beat both. He is too accurate to not hurt Khan at some point, and despite being undefeated, i still don't think Garcia is anything to write home about.

Thats the thing Khan is trying to do a Maywheater against Canelo again but I think Khan lacks the Maywheater skills to avoid getting hit. When Canelo lands and he will not too sure Khan can take the shots. A bad KO will and could well mean he will end up retiring. A bad defeat could well see Khan finished. Put up a good show and then the fight with Brook will happen. Lose badly he will need a tune up fight at least and I just cant see him getting back to that level.

Had this Khan v Brook debate with a mate for the last year or so. Personally i think Khan beats Kell all day long. Still think Canelo will be to strong for AK, and will be around a stone heavier in old money on the night. If Khan is to win, it will have to be early, the longer the fight goes on the harder it will be. Conelo hits hard and rarely wastes any shots. Hopefully we'll still get to see a Khan, Kell showdown at some point.

Just watched some old footage of Larry Holmes & Trevor Berbick. TB was telling Holmes at a press conference how he would 'kick his ass' in the car park. Holmes took him up on this offer, and drop kicked him off the bonnet of a car. Crazy shit, sorry can't post YT clips.

I know we rarely talk about the Ams on the tread but Team GB is building a strong set for Rio as is Ireland and with 1 more chance to quaify there is a chance for more men and women to book there seats to Rio. Also Katie Taylor got beaten for the first time in 5 years too. So she has yet to book her place.
Out of the British Ams I like the looks of Galal Yafai and Muhammad Ali both look classy.
As for the Irish team Paddy Barnes , Michael Conlan and Katie Taylor if she gets to Rio have Gold medal chances. Also my surprise package will be Brendan Irvine also Joe Ward will medal too. Look at the end of the games and any of the major boxing promotors will be snapping up some of these fighters. To start the cycle all over again love my am boxing at times more than the pro game some great fights out there.

Yes there really are some top quality amateurs in the GB squad at present. After the olympics we have the prospect of adding 2 more British heavyweights to the pro mix in Joe Joyce and Frazier Clarke.

Anthony fowler is a top prospect and Joe Cordina is vastly improve after is WSB involvement.

I'd imagine there will be quite a few turning pro after Rio 2016 as 4 years is a long wait for the next olympics. I'd be interested where Buatsi and Fowler are weight wise as they're both in the region of that competitive British super middle weight scene. AlthoughFowler could be chasing up the likes of Eubank Jr. And Billy Joe Saunders at middle weight perhaps.

Great story, Buncey wrote an article on it a while back

Disagree re:brook, he'd handle Khan over 12 rounds, be a better fight than most would expect, style etc, nonetheless, brook wins for me..

I fear for khan against Canelo, those shots you highlight will be heavier than khan has experienced before, his jaw doesn't inspire me !!

That's why we need to see this fight. I think Khan looks defensively better under VH. His undoing in the past has been too stand and trade when he dosnt need to, the Garcia fight being a prime example. Kell's a good boxer but now needs to start mixing it with the best at 147, thought he got some unfair stick in his last fight against Bizier who was a mandatory opponent and not in his league. Still, Khan wins on points for me, just hope we get to see it.

We have a similar situation to Hatton and Witter. Witter got left behind because he wouldn't travel, neither will Brook. To be fair to Hatton and especially Khan, they both are happy to fight the best in their back yards.
