The Boxing thread

We have a similar situation to Hatton and Witter. Witter got left behind because he wouldn't travel, neither will Brook. To be fair to Hatton and especially Khan, they both are happy to fight the best in their back yards.

Kell won the title in the US so the travelling part is not fair. He will fight whoever is out there. Also he got a bad injury after the fight too so he was always going to have a few fights back in the UK. I fully expect Kell to fight out in the US again.

Also got to love Scott Quigg calling out Rigo he wants that fight next lol. Also went on to say after rewatching the fight a few times he had himself winning the Frampton fight by a point and only once had Carl getting a draw. Haha got to laugh at it at times.

Also Martin Murray wants the George Groves fight too.

Great boxing trilogies, to name a few.

Roberto Duran v Esteben De Jesus
Riddick Bowe v Evander Holyfield
Ali v Joe Frazier
Arturo Gatti v Micky Ward

For me it was the 3 classic tare ups between Marco Antonio Barrera & Eric Morales, all fought at 3 different weights.

1) In 2000 Morales won the fight at super bantamweight on a split decision, though many thought Barrera deserved the decision.

2) In 2002, the second fight was fought at featherweight with Barrera winning by unanimous decision. Having watched this fight several times, i still think Morales won the fight.

3) The final instalment was at 130 with Barrera winning by a majority decision. This bout was declared fight of the year 2004 by Ring Magazine.

The thing I always loved was all the Mexican fights between the some fighters. Barera v Moreales all 3 fights , Barera v Marquez . Also loved Marquez v Pacquaio as well they were all classics. They are 1s off the top of my head. Or Manny against any of the Mexicans was worth a look.

To be fair with the traveling argument, it normally comes down to money, if a fighter(especially the one holding a belt) or his promoter can get a better deal in their home country(tv money, venue, advertising etc) then why would he give home advantage away? If he thinks he can crack America and reap the rewards later fair enough but it's a risk that might not pay off, boxing is a complicated business game, especially over there. Safest bet would be to do what most do, make the most of when times are good, saturate the homegrown support do some big events earn some money and then hopefully take a big away following with you to create a buzz and get attention in their media.

You look at World Champions who have travelled outside of there comfort zone for World title fights. Carl Framptons last 2 fights were on the road. 1 in the US and one in Manchester not too far from where the fighter Quigg grew up in. Frampton could probally fill out 20 to 30000 staduim. There was talk of Windsor Park or Ravenhill for fights for him. Were he would easy make his money. He chose to fight 2 away fights. His next fight might be stateside too if the Santa Cruz fight gets the go ahead 3 times on the road he will get very well paid for the next fight for him not to take on a Mandatory defence instead.
Some fighters are good on the road some are not so good. Always thought Hatton lost a bit of his magic fighting outside of Manchester. It takes a more gifted fighter to be as good on the road compared to home. I look at the World Champions out there. Rigo will travel anywhere for a fight. But he is a rare fighter to do that I know there is more to add to the list.

Although not a world title fight, i always remember Michael Gomez fighting Alex Arthur in his 'back yard'. One of the best domestic fights i'd seen in a long time. Gomez was a clear underdog but gave Arthur a good pasting.

For on the road wins Fury's takes some beating especially with the reputation Germany has for shenanigans

Another one I remember fondly was Robin Reid who I'd seen training on a couple of occasions at my gym and always followed his career closely - his win in Italy v Nardiello for a world title was a massive achievement given the old axiom that you have to knock your opponent out in Italy to get a draw.

Good shout, Reid had the godfather of Manchester boxing in his corner, Brian Hughes MBE.

I liked the Gomez fight. I was ringside for a war with Bernard Dunne and Ricardo Cordoba the best fight i ever seen live and at ringside too.
Also think Joe Calzaghe v BHop was a great win by a Brit away from home Bhop was dodgy fighter to fight and Joe on his US debut won it well.

I've noticed Hatton's been doing the rounds recently with his young HW prospect Nathan Gorman, it's early days yet with 2 pro fights(did well in the amateurs) but Ricky's chosen to put him forward first with this new deal he's got going with Frank Warren and Box Nation so he must see something. He's from good stock apparently the grandson of Bartley Gorman aka 'King of the Gypsies' bare knuckle champion related to the Fury's(I know using relatives to gauge doesn't always work out though).

Watched a couple of clips on youtube of him, very stocky, hits hard and has fast hands, no disrespect to Ricky but he looks out of shape even for a trainer which is slightly worrying but I'm sure he has a team of trainers there at the gym now(didn't he re-unite with Billy Graham and hire him too?). Could be one to watch, he fights on the Billy Joe Saunders under-card on the 30th April on Box Nation.

GGG v Dominic Wade
Roman Gonzalez v McWilliams Arroyo
Kenia Enriquez v Amaris Quintana

Golovkin weighed in bang on 159 Dominic Wade 159.6

Nathan Gorman fights on Copper Box show 30 April then he is back out 2 weeks later on 14 May. He looks an excellent prospect

So Frampton v Santa Cruz is on for New York in the summer. Makes sense for Frampton its the next big money fight. I know people will say he should fight Rigo but the money aint there in that fight sadly. I would of loved to see that fight. IF Carl beats Santa Cruz sets up a big unification fight with Lee Selby too. Or even Gary Russell Jnr or Vasyl Lomachenko fair play to Frampton in takking this fight I think he beats Santa Cruz and him against Gary Russell Jnr be a great fight too.

Fair play to Frampton he's always been happy to travel, and is prepared to fight anyone, similar to Khan. I think he beats Selby at 126 and 'maybe' Santa Cruz. However, Lomachenko & Russell Jnr would both be far too strong for Carl and imo would stop him early.
Can't see GGG having any problems tonight, the number one IBF challenger Tureano Johnson pulled out with a shoulder injury. Wade is the next highest ranked contender. Golovkin is 6 wins short of beating Hopkins record of middleweight title defences, currently 20 (including one no contest)
