The British Monarchy

I’m 81, I remember the last King, vaguely, I remember all the neighbours coming round to watch the Coronation on our small TV. I saw very little of the Coronation as I was sent to find a shop that was open because we ran out of milk and biscuits for the neighbours!!

I’ve kept quiet mostly on the threads about the Royal Family but only because, although I admired and respected the Queen and Princess Anne I was/am rather indifferent to the rest of them.

However I read this today:
“We may hold different points of view but it is in times of stress and difficulty that we most need to remember that we have much more in common than we have dividing us.” A quote from Lizzie herself. (Not disrespectful just what we always affectionately referred to her at home) :-)

I have mostly found that people are a mixture of good and bad. After all if we were all perfect we would have nothing to strive for. :-) :-)
Peace and calm to you all.

Basically I’m saying I am voting indifferent I guess?! :-)
I'm putting you down as posh Eccles, you had a fucking TV. We had a brick and we counted ourselves lucky.

There's thousands of sweet kind hearted old ladies who if you told them they would need to give up this years cold winter payment to fund the Queens funeral would happily do so and that's what makes me sad when we get into just what the monarchy exists for and how it's done a real good job on us all.

Not me …. mind you I guess I’m not a sweet old lady I shout at football matches…
I feel that I’ve earned that fuel payment. :-)

I chuckled at that… no it was a rented TV and if I remember correctly it went back a few months later! Rediffusion!
You could afford to rent a TV? First time we had a TV was because my cousin got his first job and bought us one. Bought me a Sega mega drive out of his next payslip.

I think it might have gone back because we had the electric cut off! But my Dad had had an accident at work, no compensation then, and had been in hospital.. you have got the violins out there haven’t you? ;-)

Every religion is accommodated in Parliament not just CofE, to which I may add in my experience isn't considered to be a serious religion by the millions that had it bestowed on them by other people.

I can see that you are arguing in good faith but we wont solve this on a message board, religion is ugly for the most part and sets people against each other.
I am arguing in good faith. (sic)
You are correct. We will solve nothing on here.
But I do sometimes feel that people on your side of the Irish Sea distance themselves from any responsibility of how things are. Like it’s our problem and what are we like? Eh?
Things that you see as traditional and harmless, can also be viewed as being archaic and unequal by people in your same kingdom.

I have saved any such argument to this thread about the monarchy rather than the Queen’s thread, as regardless of any argument about your constitution in the 21st century, she was your head of state and respected for how she carried out her duty.

However, there may be trouble ahead.

Does the poll question mean should we have a constitutional monarchy, or does it mean we should strip the Windsors of all their titles as well?

I don't care if Charles bounces around in his castles and wears a crown, I just don't want him being the head of my country because one of his ancestors convinced the country God annointed him to rule over them 1000 years ago.

So presidential v monarchy?

Titles have to go, there is simply no need. It promotes snobbery. Britain has to get away from this way of thinking.

I’m bringing my 95 year old grandma back home to watch the funeral. She was never a royalist, but loved the pomp and ceremony.

I can’t really think of a better way of watching the Queen’s funeral than with her, although I wish my wife could be there too, but she has to take another funeral at midday.

What happens to the monarchy in the future will depend on them, mostly. If they interfere in modern life, they’ll disappear quicker than if they just turn up at stuff in fancy dress.

Have you met many old people? They’d stab you if you threatened to take any of their payments away!
