The British Monarchy

Fair point in the first paragraph.
However as you explain yourself later, you ask this question and people do tend to trip themselves up depending on their own viewpoint or perhaps prejudices.

I’m genuinely not trying to be obstreperous in a British forum but it’s something I’ve never got my head around.
I mean, were my grandparents British because they were born in a pre Republic Ireland. Were they considered so by English people. Did they consider themselves so.?
My own father was born pre the Republic, my mother just after it.

Britishness never entered the conversation over here. It’s something we don’t consider, we see ourselves as very different but 100 years ago were we considered so by mainland Britain.
The last bit was more about making the point that it can mean different things. That person tried to define it (clearly in a way that they thought would keep them in it, but exclude others).

I'd suggest we give leeway to the person defining themselves, but they don't get to define everyone's right to feel that this is there home. Who knows what your parents felt. There are levels of complexity with Ireland that go way beyond the Irish Mancunians I went to school with :)

I myself really don't care what people's answers are about themselves. I do understand it's importance to many immigrants, or recent descendants of immigrants as there are obviously people who would try to tell them this isn't where they belong, so being British takes on added importance.

She certainly came across as looking for an argument. She knew what the woman was asking but chose to be evasive just to cause a situation. She's culturally appropriated a name and look ( which apparently is a big no no nowadays) then when asked where she's from kicks off.
It's like me standing there in a kilt and sporran, even though I'm not Scottish , then getting offended when someone is trying to get to the bottom of which part of Scotland I'm from, and I just keep saying I'm from Audenshaw.

Why is it always the same people bigging up Brexit, defending Trump, defending the Tories, hating Megan Markle and defending stuff like this?

They see episodes like this and particularly Meghan Markle marrying in to the Royal family as thin end of the wedge critical race theory.

Race as a social construct drives a dagger to the heart of nationalism.

With the greatest respect mate, I feel like you’re maybe missing the point. If she’d just asked about Fulani’s heritage there wouldn’t have been an issue. It was the persistent, inappropriate nature of the questioning that caused the problem. Have you read the full transcript?
In all faireness, I have read the transcript which is a one sided view of a conversation..come on..you must accept that someone who was generally regarded as kind, has not really been given a chance to give her side..ever had a barney with your partner where there is a conversation about who said what ?? Watch the GMB video, to me contradictory.
Lets just agree to disagree..!!!

In all fairness I was about to post ever had a barney with the mrs. then realised that you may be LGBTQ..so changed it to partner..If you have never had a partner I must apologise. !!

My oh my!

The Fulani is a nomadic tribe that roams the Sahel, too far north to be sucked very much into the slave trade. I've met them, they're incredible people, fiercely independent and staggeringly striking....

They sharpen their teeth, did you know that?

Ngozi, on the other hand, is an Igbo name from the south east of Nigeria, about 1,000 km from the Sahel, you know? Biafra? The Biafran war? Lieutenant-Colonel Ujukwu? ring any bells?

Of course not

One of my best mates is an Igbo. You know any Igbo? Fulani? You know where Nigeria is? Or Ghana?

Know anything about the golden age of Nigerian music from the 70's?

Of course not.

The Igbo...

Lovely people.

I'm tired of catering to idiots like you.

The really perverse thing is you think you're being oh so politically correct, yet when it comes to African history, culture, anything really, you know sweet Fanny Adams about fuck all.

Oh, by the way, could you be any more patronising?...

Why do you talk about black Britons as if they're children? Do you do this in real life?

Believe me, don't believe me, I couldn't give a flying fuck, but if a pasty faced fat fucker from Salford knows this, there's no reason on earth why Marlene Headley doesn't.

Met Fela once, just saying.

Presumably if the transcript was inaccurate she wouldn’t have apologised and resigned.
Well I think the gist of the conversation is obviously right
But to remember that much of the conversation is a bit odd
Seems it’s a lot for maximum impact / damage
I can’t remember five mins ago let along every line of a conversation I had

Just to be clear I am quite fond of the Royal Family - well its core anyway. However what has to be understood here is that there is a transcript of the conversation and a few witnesses who corroborate it so it happened. Clearly Ngozi Fulani took offence at what Lady Hussey said in the same way that witnesses were shocked by her persistence with her line of questioning having already been given truthful answers.

This is covered in unconscious bias training - the thing that people like the Tory Party thinks nobody needs. This is why people moan about the NHS appointing people in these roles then wonder why the outcomes for minorities in some diseases is poorer than it is for white folks.

All of the mard arses in the media decrying these events and offering at best paper thin excuses have to be recognised as grifters who also make a good living imagining lies about Harry and Meghan - they are already fragile because within the Royal Family there is a kind of code of silence where they won't respond to the press and criticism - Harry now freed from that restraint can and is - they grifter love that because thats giving them even more to write about for money - look at the response to a 6o second - yep thats 1 MINUTE - trailer which has generated column inches imagining all sorts of things will be revealed when in reality for now nobody knows. If the exchange between Ngozi and Lady Hussey is accepted then it threatens their grift of hate - their income stream - so from Sarah Vine to Piers Morgan they have to go in hard. Its Brexit all over again - never admit you were wrong - keep pushing an idea even when its becoming more and more clear its bollocks.

Thanks for trying to answer me, mate, but I hope you understand where an Irishman’s confusion comes from.
I find it hard to nail down a definition of what a lot of you hold so dear.

Perhaps the same question could be asked about what does it mean to be Irish. I can certainly see that happening as the diaspora opens up and immigration reaches second generations.

Who goes around writing transcripts (verbatim) of their encounters?
maybe someone who (before they went) thinks the royal family is racist...they may be. but get real - this was a stich up from someone with a pre-loaded agenda.

Is this the Orwellian world you want to live in tripping up old grannies - recording them and spilling the beans to the press? for what? for doing their job, even if she was insensative.
cancel the world.

Could end the monarchy to save it happening.

Who wrote a transcript? Who recorded it?

Othering is not just a right wing pursuit you know.

I sometimes get the impression that if Piers Morgan said that gravity is real you'd jump off a cliff to prove him wrong.

Right wing talking heads take grievances and spin them for their own advantage and often they make them up, but sometimes they don't. Of course the right will always spin a grievance for their own advantage, but sometimes the grievance is very real and rooted in reality and the left are simply incapable of giving voice to it, in fact they are increasingly complicit and close down any dispassionate argument to the contrary.

There is no churn of ideas on the left anymore, just an orthodoxy. Bizarrely there is tremendous churn of ideas on the right, all of them bollocks of course and some, see Liz Truss, more bollocks than others.

Are you auditioning for a slot on GB News? ;)

Those lying sacks of shit knowingly lie for a living, I couldn't do it even if I wanted to, I'm simply incapable of imagining how a person does that, peddles blatant lies, everyday, all the time.

And yet some of them believe everything they say is true. Couldn't you fill Darren Grimes slot?

IMO if the transcript had not been an accurate representation it would have been challenged.
It hasn't.

Absolutely no surprise which side of the argument you fall on. The world doesn’t need cancelling, just the gobshites that inhabit it.

Hey! you’re bright aren’t you...look, she maybe is racist, but, I don’t know for sure and neither do you...that's the point. Innocent before being proven guilty, trial by media and idiots like you -no, thats not on.

Persistently asking someone ‘where are you from?’ maybe insensitive/annoying at best, but, NOT a sacking offence.
What side am I on? ...the side of truth, - maybe - is all this is, at best...you're at the front of the queue with a torch in hand, you sad man.
