The changing face of Christmas

Getting the latest ‘Now that’s what I call Music …’ double tape for Christmas and some sort of a City video tape ( celebrating avoiding relegation)

No bloody mobiles being used at the dinner table back then. Have told kids it’s going in Turkeys arse if I see or hear them again at the table

seems no different than the last 30 odd years bar it never snows and the football fixtures are messed around.

when christmas became about cosumerism as an event not a festival of any deep meaning unless religious it became generic.

once as a kid you grow up and then your kids grow up christmas just becomes another event that comes and goes with an excuse to drink and see people you haven't for a while.
The shop displays I was referring to would now be circa 50 years ago tbh, and no doubt The shopkeepers decorated their stores to enhance footfall as well as to mesmerize 4 year old boys like myself, but I suppose that my Christmases have been better because there has nearly always been a believer in the family due to the age gaps between my nieces and great niece's and with a Santa believer about it does make it better (IMHO)

Queuing up for hours on Christmas Day, usually in freezing temperatures at Wood Street Mission for a second hand game of Ludo, with half the pieces missing. The only Christmas present most of the kids from Hulme and surrounding areas would get.

This is actually a story my mum used to tell us not my own experience. But I thought I’d use this thread to give a shout out to a local charity that’s always been close to my heart.

Christmas Carolers coming to your door,

Dad and Grandad going to the pub Christmas Eve night before the presents were all wrapped, then they’d come back half pissed and try to assemble desks, bikes etc and there would be bits left over that they couldn’t figure out where they went.

Paper chains and balloons hung from the ceiling; I’m sure my dad used to deliberately make the balloons look like a cock and 2 balls just to shock my Nan’s when they came for dinner,

‘Snow in a can’ - everybody’s windows would have this stuff on and it always left marks on the windows,

Kids on new bikes! Every Christmas Day when I walk the dog I count how many kids on their bikes I see and the number gets lower every year.

I know some of these are just personal memories rather than traditions but it really did seem more special and less commercial when I was younger.
