I'm amazed no-one is challenging the idea that we need to impoverish people to stop demand. But it's people with no spare money who are struggling, not those with enough money to keep spending. If you can afford a night out, are you supposed to stay at home so strapped for cash pubs and restaurants tell employees they can't have a less-than-inflation pay rise. Will the supermarkets reduce profit margins to keep prices down?

It was like pulling teeth this morning on Radio 4 - with a haulage operator: "What happens if there's a recession?" "We lose business, but we've lost business anyway. Our prices have gone up to meet the pay rises needed to keep drivers." "Why did you pay them more?" "There was a driver shortage." "Why?" "We couldn't employ staff from the EU..."
 
And the Tories are blaming the BoE for printing too much money during the pandemic. Didn't they print a lot to settle the markets after Truss and Kwarteng went mad?

You surely aren’t that naive to not understand the correlation between inflation and interest rates in an economy that needs to service debt?
 
So Biden has blocked our Ben's ambitions eh? This lot are just so fucking thick they have no idea how to do politics and diplomacy. Biden was Obama's number 2 and good friend. Johnson called Obama Nigerian and against Britains interests. Wallace said we didn't lose in Afghanistan but said Biden and the Americans ran away meaning we had to leave too. They say this shit to please the gammon here but it is absorbed around the world and however much they would like Biden to be senile its clear he remembers stuff and takes action accordingly.

People who fetishize "the special relationship" needs to see the reality. Even at our peak we were always a junior partner to the USA. Both world wars in the 20th Century were decisively swung by the entry of America. A good mate who loaned you £100 then saw your fortunes really fall in bad times would not expect you to keep repaying with interest on that £100 for 60 years - the American's didn't see us on our uppers in the 70's and say "tell you what buddy lets forget that loan repayments" Most Americans probably think this country is like a Harry Potter film set - good for a visit but nothing serious.

Sobering reading from Aditya Chakrabortty in the Guardian today. Stand out line:

If the same share of GDP was paid out in wages today as in 1976, the average working-age household would have an extra £9,744 a year. We haven’t lost that 10 grand a year through laziness at work but because politicians from Thatcher onwards smashed up trade unions, undermined labour rights, and crowed over the result as a “flexible labour market”. What they really created was a low-wage workforce, in a low-growth country ruled by politicians with low ambitions for everyone bar themselves.

It is Thatchers fault that we shop Primark and Thatcher shopped at Harrod’s/Waitrose it’s a false premise that we would become like North Korea where half the population make bombs and the rest starve.
“Over priced goods poorly made” you say when we made top of the range goods but the price was set by the “boss’ who preferred to close his manufacturing business down to buy cheap imports from abroad rather than reduce his salary and profit
Before Thatcher devastated the UK people had their holidays abroad and bought cars even people in council houses but the present Utopia is some are forced to shop in food banks and buy clothes and other household items from charity shop’s
We are isolated now we left the EU
