The Conservative Party

We were told by the lying cabal now running the country we couldn't reduce VAT on energy costs due to unelected eurocrats making the rules and it couldn't be done because of our loss of sovrinty. (sic)

It flies in the face of that bullshit that Spain has now removed VAT on their energy bills. Who'd have thought it, a sovereign nation in the EU making decisions benefitting it's citizens without an unelected eurocrat in sight.

Hasn't the Netherlands also done the same?

Oh well, there you go.
I'm sure the clowns who supported Brexit will explain why we weren't allowed to make our own rules even though other EU member states are.

I am sure some clowns did support Brexit because they believed this nonsense, but others knew it was nonsense and voted for Brexit anyway.

There were many reasons to vote either way, to put it down to one issue is simplistic

Has any EU country reduced VAT on energy to under 5%? Poland wanted to.

The scandal is that the cabal told us we had to leave the EU to reduce 5% VAT to zero, but never intended to do it.

Wrong.

The EU rules say energy must be subject to a minimum of 5% VAT rate and Spain has reduced VAT from 21% to 10% still comfortably above the 5% floor set by the EU.

Netherlands have reduced their overall tax burden which makes up over 50% of domestic bills - and as a consequence has the most expensive fuel cost in Europe. The dutch have a very complicated tax system on energy but the average persons tax burden has now gone from about 50% to 40%. It’s hard to break out the VAT portion but it’s around 20% after this, again like Spain comfortably above the 5% floor

VAT is a shit way to help people anyway. It sounds like a stellar idea but is basically worthless in the overall scheme of things. The average household is expect to pay a total of £89 in VAT a year up from £61 they pay currently with the new price hike - give or take £30 a year or £2.50 a month. The biggest benefactors would be those with the biggest bills who live in the biggest houses and likely not to be all that mithered about the cost of energy really. Far better to leave VAT where it is (at 5%) and give targeted support to those struggling the most. Which is what I think they are trying to do isn’t it? although it could always be a bit more.

No they haven’t because they can’t.

I agree on the second point - only because they said they were going to - but I don’t think it was a good idea in the first place. Far better to ensure homes are efficient etc by providing grants to get fuel costs down and let those knocking around in big old houses pay for the privilege.

Facts rather than the usual inaccurate rants will never catch on.

Here's some facts for you.

During the 2016 EU referendum campaign, Boris Johnson and Michael Gove gave strong indications that VAT would be cut on domestic fuel if the UK voted to leave the EU.
Writing in the Sun they promised that "fuel bills will be lower for everyone", saying "when we Vote Leave, we will be able to scrap this unfair and damaging tax".
In an interview with Sky News in May 2016 Michael Gove said: "I think when we take back control of the millions we give to the European Union, this [scrapping VAT on energy bills] has to be the top priority."

We left the EU two years ago. You'd have thought Boris Johnson's promise and Michael Gove's top priority would have been implemented by now.
