Hospitals up and down the country are packing in extra beds to try and deal with discharging issues (typically lack of suitable space outside the acute setting), clearing of back logs, and usual winter pressures. We’re seeing 7 beds in bays designed for 6. If this is happening across all wards it’s giving a little over 16% increase in bed capacity but with no change in staff numbers it’s small wonder they don’t have enough staff for everyday tasks and what staff there are are run off their feet. It also creates practice that might be deemed undesirable as it’s much harder for staff to navigate around beds in this configuration and everything is just that little bit more chaotic.
