The Conservative Party

The 'cutting benefits in real terms' thing implies to me that the next uplift will be below inflation. A sneaky trick. They did it for several years when first in government to 'make work pay.' That is, to make starvation wages look slightly more tolerable.

My guess is there will be an uplift in the personal allowance to prevent any chance of basic rate state pensioners being dragged into income tax, as that would not play well.
That’s frozen until 2026 isn’t it?

No chance pal, it usually goes up about £300 a year we are already £600 down, it’s a cash cow for them
Inflation is pushing the basic pension close to being taxable. I doubt very much they want to apply tax to thousands and thousands of people on state pensions and nowt else. I might be wrong, of course. I don't claim to be infallible. However, just imagine the headlines!

I remember one year under Brown when the pension went up by a few pence, just about enough to buy a stamp. All hell broke out. You'd have thought he's started loading pensioners onto cattle trucks and taking them to camps. Yet what had happened was that the pension had gone up by inflation, which was very low at the time.

That was how the 2.5% backstop increase came to be introduced by the way.
