The Conservative Party

Net lawful immigration is about 700,000. This means the government has issued over one million visas in a year. That's a funny thing for a government to do that allegedly wants to reduce immigration. Presumably, it judges these people are needed for one reason or another. The students, for example, bring in big bucks to the universities, and foreign exchange at that.

But all the focus is on (about) 40,000 or so asylum seekers making it across on boats. And even more so, on sending 200-300 of them to Rwanda in exchange for a similar number with 'complex needs' who will be a greater burden on the NHS and benefits system.

Beats me. Surely even the most deluded fuckwit can see this for what it is. A distraction and a nonsense. They could just have easily cut 40,000 off the visas issued.

Simply burying this cancer of a government will not atone for the cruel destruction of democracy planned and enacted by them. Mogg's attack on the National Trust for not white-washing britain's leading role in the slave trade just one example of how far they are prepared to sink to rewrite history, When the mainstream media not only aid and abet far-right policies, bank-roll them and print lie after lie attacking even centrists, the likes of murdoch/dacher and the barclay/telegraph regime, then a version of the nurnberg trials is needed. Just the threat of it would wipe the smirk off the faces of those that feel beyond accountability, Re-hashing the race card the last throw of the dice, it only worked for brexit as a promise, when it proved to be just another "£350,000,000 a week to the NHS" LIE, that ship sank like every other tory slogan...

As you say, they see themselves as beyond accountability. Unless we do something to address the absolutely toxic nature of the media in this country we are doomed to continue down the slippery slope we've been on for years.

Yep, the bought and paid for (allegedly) media have a lot to answer for.

Not that they'll ever have to...

I wish that anybody who conceptually thinks of this as a good idea spent just one minute actually looking at the proposed agreement. I'm not convinced even every Tory party member has looked at it - let alone some of the supporters you'll find in your local pub.

Do I understand that some people in this country want to see what they perceive to be people who don't qualify for asylum sent to Rwanda? Yes, I think it's incredibly ethically questionable, mean-spirited and problematic, but I get that there are people who would want that.

But would anybody actually want this specific agreement? Absolutely fucking not, because it's a mess and makes zero sense. It's an expensive gamble on it acting as a deterrent, something we have absolutely no evidence for. In the (likely) event it doesn't work it will not only be eye-wateringly expensive but also could actually increase the number of claimants we get, because not only do we have to take in Rwandan claimants in return but the language of the agreement makes it possible for failed claimants to get returned to us.

It would at least make some sense to me if this government were vindictive yet smart operators... but vindictive, stupid and incompetent makes them look like the kind of baddies you'd find in an Austin Powers film.
Some Tories would send everyone who isn't like them to Rwanda, or somewhere else. (See "Windrush".)

290 million to set up a deal with Rwanda and this is before a flight has even taken off. This horseshit government is not fit to be in charge of a child’s savings account let alone a country’s economy. It’s scandalous where all the money goes for one of the world’s richest nations to treat its own people like this
