In the pesky real world 5Live had a journalist crossing the channel with migrants about 2 weeks before Christmas and when he asked them what they thought about possibly being sent to Rwanda they’d never heard of it, let alone the policy.

The people getting these boats aren’t exactly tapped into British political discourse, everything they know is what the traffickers or family have told them,

Around 70% of asylum claims are successful first time or after appeal. This suggests that the majority are claiming asylum legitimately.

The only ones that are actually illegal are the ones that haven’t been sent back yet or have gone to ground without having their cases heard.

I'm just wondering how the poster came to the decision that the rest are not "illegal."

Again, I’m not sure what he will reply, but I think he was more meaning that all people that cross in small boats are labelled as illegal, which isn’t the case.

Ive read it again and get a different meaning from it. Agree with your interpretation now.

Still think it is a bit odd, but will sleep on it ;-)

All the Tory politicians and all the Tory commentators say they are illegal - the Tory Govt made a law declaring anyone who comes here by small boat - see the illegal migration act 2023. Therefore the question stands if someone is here without a visa or permission they are deemed illegal. People who do illegal things get charged and go to prison instead the "illegals" get put in an hotel of on a barge ( actually very prison like ) but none are actually arrested and tried.

Thats because their "law" would get shredded in a court of law and they can't afford for that to happen. Its the new Tory way - you come here in a boat we make a law so you are now illegal - you are held in a queue backlog - we make an announcement we have fixed that so its done the backlog no longer exists - we will not get a GE Sunak will just pass a law to say he won and lo it will come to pass - he won
