The country is in a difficult place. I don't think the impact of Brexit is remotely the sole cause, but it hasn't helped.
Brexit was a vote to be poorer. People even acknowledged that at the time and said it was 'worth it'. But it's one thing to say it, another to face up to reality.
We are poorer as a country, for several different causes. We are not willing to accept it, so we are borrowing to get by. How long this can go on, I don't know.
The only way to improve matters is to invest in the right things. 1. How do you decide what are the 'right' things? 2. Where do you get the money? It's going to be a gamble.
We need a certain amount of immigration for economic reasons. However, getting the numbers right is tough, and it's a political hot potato. Immigrants are in danger of being the X group everyone blames for all the ills of the country. They are not, but the right will argue they are.
It's all very dangerous.
