For my sins, I had Hunt - granted he has faults - down as one of the more sensible Tories and when he was brought in following the Truss/Kwarteng debacle it felt like a good decision.

I think the 700m was for far more extensive costs than the admitted 290m.

290m to Rwanda govt
The rest was based on:
chartering flights (which weren't used)
costs for detaining/releasing possible people a lot
salary of the 1000 civil servants involved.

Basically, it was making the point that the cash sent to Rwanda was nowhere near the overall cost of all aspects.
