The Conservative Party

Yes, it was a Tory programme but Labour could have halted more of the cuts that did occur. My point was that it is wrong to blame all the cuts on the Tories when clearly the labour government 1964-1970 was also happy to oversee a severely reduced national rail network.

Of course, some recommended cuts were never implemented, such as the Liverpool suburban network which has since been expanded and is thriving thanks mainly to the efforts of local government there. It is pretty shocking to realise that some very well used lines such Liverpool-Southport would have been lost had Beeching been implemented in full.

Personally I suspect that providing a rail link to Skelmersdale would have a stronger case than Fleetwood but we'll see what happens. (Fleetwood could arguably be just as effectively served by an extended tram service from Blackpool).

Fleetwood is going to need trains to cope with massive resurgence of the fishing industry post brexit, in 10 years time we will all be living of the sea.....

Usual Tory Strategy

1) Create a problem

2) Listen to the noise caused by the problem.

3) Throw a load of money at their mates to solve the problem

4) Claim the praise for solving the problem .

Rinse and repeat ad nausuem ........ cant wait to see what their decision on Huawei will be and how much it will cost the taxpayer to sort in the future

It's important to play to your strengths. This country is a bit shit, and this shit government is determined to turn us in to world class shithole.

Beeching report was commissioned by the Conservative government of 1960 and produced in 1963 (still a Conservative Government)... for me the issue was that the report made no recommendation about what to do with the land and tracks after closure (unlike America which adopts a Rail Bank scheme which ensures that any operator has to keep the land for any future use). The transport secretary at the time was Marples (who had connections to a road construction company - strange that) heralded the era of the car and the building of lots of new motorways.

At the time it seemed like a reasonable strategy but its the lack of long term planning in exchange for short term £s by the Torys which pisses me off. Same as the failure to maintain the coal mines after they were shut down which now means we are importing coal from Australia (lets not talk about carbon footprint there)

Im sure that Wilsons Labour Government had more worries on their plate as they had been handed a £900 million national debt that had been run up by the Conservatives which had to be paid back within four years.

But its nostalgia that's what this is all about Brexit is all about one big trip memory lane, rebuilding the empire showing them that old blighty is a force to reckoned. These railways being reopened will do nothing for the economy, a few wet dreams for some old crusty train spotters. Its all about perception making it look like they are doing something like this nonsense on Australian points system because immigrants are forcing wages down (which is a total lie) But who cares we have a shit old Victorian railway system falling apart. But good Old Boris can bang on about reopening railway lines closed down by his party in the 60's and the fuckwits will lap it up.
