Yes, it was a Tory programme but Labour could have halted more of the cuts that did occur. My point was that it is wrong to blame all the cuts on the Tories when clearly the labour government 1964-1970 was also happy to oversee a severely reduced national rail network.
Of course, some recommended cuts were never implemented, such as the Liverpool suburban network which has since been expanded and is thriving thanks mainly to the efforts of local government there. It is pretty shocking to realise that some very well used lines such Liverpool-Southport would have been lost had Beeching been implemented in full.
Personally I suspect that providing a rail link to Skelmersdale would have a stronger case than Fleetwood but we'll see what happens. (Fleetwood could arguably be just as effectively served by an extended tram service from Blackpool).
Fleetwood is going to need trains to cope with massive resurgence of the fishing industry post brexit, in 10 years time we will all be living of the sea.....
