The Conservative Party

I have always been anti-exam.. Maybe because I was fucking hopeless at them. All they indicate is what you have remembered on a certain day at a certain time and whether you can write about it in a coherent manner.

Kids are taught to answer questions, they are not taught to question answers. Its all very well knowing that the Battle of Trafalgar was in 1805 and some fella stood on a column called Nelson was in charge of a ship called HMS Victory. Its great knowing that. But what is the point of knowing that if you do not know the context behind it and the reason and rationale for the Battle.

Could you answer that in one hour under pressure in an exam hall, or would your knowledge and understanding be better judged over a one week period with course work, discussion and debate taken into account.

Is it better to understand the subject than repeat than what you have learned about a subject?

The whole system is designed to get those kids who are better at memorising and have more access to materials to memorise to get into top universities than it is to get kids to actually understand a subject. So in history is a kid with a great memory who is able to rote learn more talented than a kid who understands the subject but does not remember the dates things happened. Does the A* of the kid who can rote learn discriminate against the D of the kid who understands the subject but can't remember the name of the warship.

In my opinion, rote learning produces drones, they are easily malleable, which of course plays into hands of authoritarian governments, a kid who is free thinking and questions the answers is less likely to be controlled.
Started reading this and thought I would agree but as I went on, the analogy that came to mind was, you could score 100 penalties in training but miss the one in the pressure cooker situation of a final of a competition.
Not saying everything is good about exams but it might be wrong to say everything is wrong about exams. They test your knowledge and application of that knowledge to an extent in a pressure situation. Perhaps even separate the ones who can perform better under pressure from
The ones who do better under a more relaxed environment.

The claim that there is such a thing as a photographic memory is a very, very dubious one.

This, combined with your eagerness to suggest that a young person who got top grades at GCSE, A Level and degree level was "thick" suggests that you might not be the most unbiased or informed witness.

I am certainly not saying that the qualifications this person achieved makes them really intelligent either - you can get such qualifications with lots of hard work, rather than some genius intellect. But the description of this person as thick and some sort of recipient of gross luck with his, alleged, photographic memory, sounds very similar to many cases of sour grapes.

Apologies for the description .... What I meant was he had no common sense, no problem solving skills beyond the theorems and formulae that he had learned at school.

Perhaps ''thick'' was the wrong description!

To be sympathetic she still sounds sarcastic?

If this huge waste of taxpayers money was the idea of a Labour run council can you imagine the Tory Party pile on there would be? Yet oddly enough there's been barely a word of complaint from them

It's easy to think of people who went to top schools and top universities, who emerged from the system with a clutch of certificates, but are not fit to run a whelk stall.

We maybe need to rethink the whole business of education from the ground upwards. What we have is still influenced by the 'gifted amateur' concept of the 19th Century. 'Gentlemen' would be given a 'liberal education' including the Classics. This would fit them to rule over such base mechanics as engineers and scientists, who were, of course, not 'gentlemen.' Gentlemen would not soil their hands with such things - it was far below them. Why, people might think them mere tradesmen! No, the ideal was to have a country estate, ride to hounds, serve as a magistrate and maybe become Foreign Secretary in your spare time.

Some people may think what I am describing is arcane, but the point is that is the foundation our education system was built on. It's the sort of life Public Schools were designed to fit you for. Grammar schools were a pale, watered-down version of Public Schools, often copying their traditions.

We have, of course, tinkered with the system over the years, but have never totally reformed it. Some people have been pressing for years for 'parity of esteem' at the school level between technical and academic qualifications, and it speaks volumes that they are still pressing because it has not been achieved.

The Labour Party used to be peppered with ex-miners, former railwaymen and postmen etc - but gradually its evolved to picking candidates from the lawyer fraternity who too will have had a rarefied education and so politics has drifted away from its original base allowing a vacuum into which has seeped some pretty extreme actors to poison things

3.8m people just ignored have had no financial help through the pandemic - IR35 changes impacting self employed - taking the £20 uplift to benefits away from the poorest - being shamed into feeding the kids of the poor in school holidays and now this - they are all voters - they really don't care who they piss off - its like they don't intend to get re-elected? Maybe fuck everything and everyone over then just walk away leaving someone else to clear up their mess?

I’ve been thinking this for a while, but I dismissed it as too far fetched even for this government’s abilities.
The problem with this theory is that it would mean that the lying fraud and his team would actually have the ability to devise and execute a cogent plan…….you see my problem?
Then I put it in the context of Johnson and his narcissistic views and came up with a completely believable scenario where he really doesn’t give a shit for anything but his own ‘legacy’
Plant the mines then walk off, and whoever steps on them in the future gets the blame for the explosion and damage caused.
’Wasn’t me guv…I was off writing my memoirs in my luxury Tuscan villa when the shit hit the fan’.

Its a theory that has been forming in my mind for a while - when you have the evidence I quoted and the head of North East commerce as well as fishermen and growers stating since the turn of the year the Tories have turned their back on small business - their traditional bedrock - there are people I know who are Tory Party members here in Darlington, Stockton and Teesside who were euphoric at winning seats they couldn't see happening who are now expressing doubt that they can retain them. A former work colleague I have in Stockton who is a member says Matt Vickers is turning out to be a bell end and Simon Clarke here is Guisborough is universally disliked for his unswerving loyalty to Johnson to the effect that he stood down as a junior minister when he got caught knobbing a colleague. The New Blue Wall has no foundations.

They don't care who they piss off because they will gerrymander the constituencies , suppress the votes and abolish the fixed term parliament act.... enabling them to remain in power for a very long time whilst having no policies and improving the lives of no one.

Apologies.

By giving the lowest possible wage the government are basically subsidising big corporations with public money to keep those corporations happy (ie. making more profit).

Add to the insult, all these big corporations got a huge tax break during COVID and took the cash to make even bigger profits.

Ha - as if the Home Secretary would hold this view.........oh wait..........

Of course the argument that every asylum seeker should be accommodated is the best policy is flawed but nuanced debate is not entertained in public spheres.

I have said this time and time again - the biggest benefits scroungers are the big businesses who are happy to pay minimum wage on limited hours and let the tax payer pick up the slack
