The Conservative Party

yeah but the anti BBC culture war hadn't been declared at that stage nor was there a need to distract from Covid (Johnson had yet to delay and double the death toll at a stroke ) nor was the full horror of Brexits impact on industry being faced up to.
Now - when they need a distraction they look on twitter and see how all their supporters have a flag avatar so use that to trigger loyalty - believe you me if most of their supporters had a kitten as an avatar you would not be able to see a minister who didn't have at least one kitten in shot. Populist bull shit "government" who don't govern just sloganise and campaign

I imagine most governments want to be popular. Or at least set out to be but rarely end up being so - else they’d still be in power.

Whatever rationale he gave himself for asking the question and then patting himself on the back by tweeting it; he’s wrong. He has set a new bar of stupid.

Interestingly we've gone two consecutive days with government ministers being interviewed without flags behind them. Maybe a bit of realisation about how pathetic it looks is sinking in.

You’re given a privileged position to quiz the head of the BBC and your brain actually says “ask him about the number of pictures of the Union Jack are in a report”

What a fucking embarrassment he is.

Incidentally, for balance. I just checked the Tory manifesto for 2019 number of union jacks in that 64 page document? 0, not even when talking about the union. Polish your own mirror springs to mind

You must remember though he is a new MP for North Norfolk - literally channelling his inner Partridge

When did flags inside ever become a thing?
Its all part of a culture war which is being purposely stoked by the right wing tories to keep the working classes on the their side.

“Here’s my flag you leftie snowflake tree hugging do gooder : I dare you to challenge it”. Like the hard right do with poppies.

The irony is that all of the people who have suddenly become all obsessed with displaying the Union flag are the exact same ones who have put the Union in the most precarious situation it’s been in centuries.

If you want to be a tub thumping nationalist moron, at least have the honesty to display the flag of St George, you simple minded, divisive pricks.

That third paragraph is the issue. It’s all projection, I get it but it’s so depressing that it’s so easily fallen for by so many.

'Greed' and 'capitalism' helped UK's vaccines success, says PM

But sources said the prime minister had "very insistently" withdrawn his comments straight after making them during a Zoom call with backbenchers.

It must be tough not being able to speak your mind, ever, at least not publicly, even for a professional liar.

Telling folk what you really believe is easier than lying, constantly lying must be exhausting.

It's no wonder he looks wasted.

That must be the first time he has ever told the truth.

Tim Marshall in his book "worth dying for" puts part of the flag shagging down to Euro 96.

All of a sudden we saw masses of St George's flags across the country. He makes the point that when England won the WC in 1966 it was mostly Union Jacks at Wembley.

In the 70s the NF and the BNP used Union Jacks as a Nationalist symbol (there's no Black in the Union Jack), after Euro 96 , the EDL used the Flag of St George and we saw the rise of English Nationalism, of course aided and abetted by Blair's botched devolution plans which all saw a rise in the flying of the Saltire and the Dragon and increase in Scottish and Welsh nationalism.

The use of the Union Flag is now a fight back against that nationalism and as the Conservatives are a Unionist party then the use of the flag shows that are the supposed party of the Union.

Thats the simple version according to me.
