The cool cats

It was so totally different in those days especially if you were teenage girl, you had to make sure you were friends with the hardest blokes you could find. Skinheads with half mast pants and 16 hole doc martens with the obligatory flick knife down the boot. Away fans had a police escort to the ground from hough end where the coaches parked and were kept in until we had dispersed, even so some waited and running battles down by the parkside were frequent. For some reason when an away fan was spotted all you heard was our fans making the ssshhhh sound then all hell let loose.

Football specials (trains) were not the safest of places either, emergency cords were pulled, lights smashed and often the police got on with dogs and travelled with us.

It certainly was not a place you would ever take your kids, unless you sat in the main stand.

Totally different experience these days and hopefully no one should ever feel threatened or worried that they might not make it home.

Things are different Di. There were games in the past Jane wanted to go and I refused to take her as I knew it would be dodgy. Still never taken her to the swamp.

Prefer these days loads where we can go have a beer and a laugh

Might see you if your around CitySquare before or after on Sat, not driving this weekend. Fancy a few in town and JEK & Gemma that you met in Barça are up for the game.

The whole scene had a rather homo-erotic feel to it. I strongly suspect that most of those involved were confused about their sexuality. Back in the 70's and 80's 'coming out' to a group of football fans would have been unthinkable. Instead, the members of these firms hid their gay tendencies by being aggressive and proving their manliness by kicking shit out of each other.

The only problem with this was that others got dragged in to the trouble and all footie fans hot tarred with the same brush (of being hooligans, not of being gay).

Such a shame really, when all if the trouble could have been avoided if they had just admitted their true feelings. The Guvnors, ICF, Zulus and Headhunters could still have arranged meet ups but instead of beating each other to a pulp they could have just engaged in group mutual masturbation. Still beating each other in a way I suppose but the worst injuries would have been a sprained wrist or maybe friction burns at worst.

I was wondering when an amateur psychiatrist would appear.

Is this actually deflection by you? Are you saying that you wanted them to all be gay so you could get a good pummelling and a punch in the face was not enough?

You may have a point though, who am I to say.

Those who are probably 35 and under possibly don't understand what it was like to follow City in the 1970's and 1980's especially away from home. Nobody is bigging up these people or glorifying in the violence but it happened and it is part of football's history. Even going to watch City at places like Grimsby carried danger, it wasn't just at places such as Leeds, Millwall etc.

Grimsby was a tough one... believe me!
Went to Grimsby in the 85/86 season on The Star Bar coach from Glossop.
We arrived nice and early and all the pissheads went on the ale. A couple of us younger lads went for a mooch around the town to check out their lads. Ended up getting split up and legged all around the town by some of their boys after asking us the time!! They saw us coming a mile away in our semi flares, gazzelles and sambas.
Grimsby were behind the times and still knocking about in bleached skin tight jeans and Puma California trainers but they were game lads and like most northern towns back then if you wanted a fight you didn't have to look far to find one.
