I was there that day, about 10 of us went in the back of a van, very dodgy day but our lot stuck together as we always did and came through unscathed, only trouble was we stopped off in Walsall for a drink on the way back and got ambushed by the locals outside the pub, running battles up and down the carpark and in a local cemetery, Daffy got his head split open by a bottle

No you didn't. Sensationalist nonsense. 99% of the time you could avoid trouble, if you really wanted to.
I'v had my say on how things were in the 70s but your reply of 99% of trouble could be avoided needs correcting Mr Nice

If you went by train to away games...as we did.... the chances of you getting out of say Middlesborough train station without being spotted and confronted were virtually nil, every station was covered by the home fans in numbers often known as a spotter firm who then went around the local pubs getting the rest of the mobs out, City were not behind the door either they did it at Piccadilly and Victoria

Coach travel was much the same, home fans would often gather at the entrance to coach parks and you had no choice but to confront them to get to the ground, again City did the same to away fans near the Parkside and later on the Kippax car park

Car travel was just about the safest but the saying 'have you got the time mate' as you got out of your vehicle was notorious for 'sussing' away fans out, all this actually went on Mr Nice, the chances of 99% non involvement in the 70s is a figment of your nice imagination, for fucks sake i got hit on the head by a wooden fence post one match at NORWICH, yes fuckin Norwich!

Yep, even still now every match I go I see plenty of ours that bare permanent reminders of comin unstuck.

Was the lad in question CJ ?
Think DDs on about the quarter final night game Maints, when they took us all to Edge Hill after the game
Yes it was a cup game, it was snowing when we eventually got back to Manc. Scouse coppers god bless em !!

Remember that game well, got nicked twice on the day, firstly after the game on Priory Road for mixing it with the mickies, charged and released once the last train had left, the dibble were nasty fuckers, think we were taken to Walton nick. Me and another lad got a lift to near Risley and as you say it was snowing like fuck, took shelter in a workmans hut on the roundabout above the M62, like daft twats we lit a fire in there to get warm The side of the hut caught fire and we couldn't put it out, so fucked off down the road towards Warrington, got nicked again and banged up for the night.

Charges were for disorderly behaviour after the game (£30 fine) and arson for the hut, (£350 including the compo) expensive weekend.

As others have said, no regrets for anything back then, me and my mates lived for the weekend and the aways were the ones we always had our best times, wasn't always about mither but it was never far away if you travelled back then.

Hit on the head with a fence post at Norwich? Were you trying to rob the locals fertilizer? Norwich in the late 70's,think Kiddo got a diving header, was the first time I'd seen the police filming fans as we came out of the railway station. Remember some wit shouting "Hello,Ken Russell's here". If my memory serves me right,The Cool Cats were in the opposite end of the ground giving the "City wave" to us sensible ones who'd gone into the designated away end. The world and football has changed beyond all recognition since those days. They were good while they lasted and on reflection despite being really scary at times,I'm pleased to have come through them virtually unscathed. Nowadays, although sanitized,I like to be able to go to the match with my son and 11 yr old grandson and know he'll be safe at the ground, and able to go to the refreshment bars on his own and not worry if he'll get jumped on by marauding Rags or Leeds scum.

Well we did laugh as the fire engines sped past on their way to put it out, could see the flames from about half a mile away, there were drums of fuck knows what in there. Tried denying the arson when they picked us up but we fucking stunk of fire, not a prayer, fuckers took every stitch of clothing, for forensics, and gave us those awful spiky blankets, not a chance of getting a kip. happy days.

Good thread this, even allowing for mr nice and his fishing expedition.

I dont acept your Logic Neil .I fyou went by car you had a long lonley walk to the ground being pesterd by people who couldnt tell the time .if you went by ordinary train the home fans were waiting to suss you out. if you went by football special the Police harrased you first then you woul spend the escorted walk to the ground dodging missiles .if you went by coach it was always a result if you didnt have a brick or two through the window .wouldnt have missed it for the world but glad it all changed now
