I was there that day, about 10 of us went in the back of a van, very dodgy day but our lot stuck together as we always did and came through unscathed, only trouble was we stopped off in Walsall for a drink on the way back and got ambushed by the locals outside the pub, running battles up and down the carpark and in a local cemetery, Daffy got his head split open by a bottle

[b"]Not glorifying anything about those days in the 70s but you had to fight to survive if you wanted to watch your team" , [/b]
No you didn't. Sensationalist nonsense. 99% of the time you could avoid trouble, if you really wanted to.
I'v had my say on how things were in the 70s but your reply of 99% of trouble could be avoided needs correcting Mr Nice

If you went by train to away games...as we did.... the chances of you getting out of say Middlesborough train station without being spotted and confronted were virtually nil, every station was covered by the home fans in numbers often known as a spotter firm who then went around the local pubs getting the rest of the mobs out, City were not behind the door either they did it at Piccadilly and Victoria

Coach travel was much the same, home fans would often gather at the entrance to coach parks and you had no choice but to confront them to get to the ground, again City did the same to away fans near the Parkside and later on the Kippax car park

Car travel was just about the safest but the saying 'have you got the time mate' as you got out of your vehicle was notorious for 'sussing' away fans out, all this actually went on Mr Nice, the chances of 99% non involvement in the 70s is a figment of your nice imagination, for fucks sake i got hit on the head by a wooden fence post one match at NORWICH, yes fuckin Norwich!

I got the same at Villa.

Hit on the head with a fence post at Norwich? Were you trying to rob the locals fertilizer? Norwich in the late 70's,think Kiddo got a diving header, was the first time I'd seen the police filming fans as we came out of the railway station. Remember some wit shouting "Hello,Ken Russell's here". If my memory serves me right,The Cool Cats were in the opposite end of the ground giving the "City wave" to us sensible ones who'd gone into the designated away end. The world and football has changed beyond all recognition since those days. They were good while they lasted and on reflection despite being really scary at times,I'm pleased to have come through them virtually unscathed. Nowadays, although sanitized,I like to be able to go to the match with my son and 11 yr old grandson and know he'll be safe at the ground, and able to go to the refreshment bars on his own and not worry if he'll get jumped on by marauding Rags or Leeds scum.
Yep fuckin Norwich, 3 of us sat on the river bank early morning after travelling overnight, just opened our tinnies before the pubs opened and 4 big rugby types came charging at us down the towpath, before i could get to my feet one whacked me with a broken fence post he picked up, bit of a stand off until the rest of our mates who were mooching about outside the Jolly Angler came onto the river and these 4 big fuckers wandered off, i was seeing stars all day!

Quality lol pissed me sides as the hu tcaught fire

Well we did laugh as the fire engines sped past on their way to put it out, could see the flames from about half a mile away, there were drums of fuck knows what in there. Tried denying the arson when they picked us up but we fucking stunk of fire, not a prayer, fuckers took every stitch of clothing, for forensics, and gave us those awful spiky blankets, not a chance of getting a kip. happy days.

Good thread this, even allowing for mr nice and his fishing expedition.
I've read it 4 times now, gets even funnier each time especially when factorin in how friggin cold that nite was n' how fucked up n' very Orrible them tit-headed Bizzies could be them days !

Not just on merseyside either, they were bastards everywhere, I got battered off them after the Shrewsbury cup game, in the train station, just for trying jib on, got took down some disused tunnel under the platform and made to run a gauntlet of the fuckers while they kicked fuck out of me, another £30 fine followed that, in fact £30 was definitely the going rate back then.

Also, blue underpants mentioned Norwich, remember a game there when we were in that covered end that was split down the middle, my mate had a bad cut from the night before when we were out in Stockport, as were leaving for Norwich at midnight he didn't bother going for stitches. We decided to get the St Johns lot to look at it and were taken round the pitch to the back of the open end, the St Johns made me wait outside on my own, trouble was we'd been spotted coming round the pitch and I had a Rourkes drift episode, including having a blade pulled in front of me, in fucking Norwich, couldn't believe it, somehow managed to remain relatively unscathed.

I know it's right that people can take their kids and mrs with them these days but it does nothing for me any more, football as a good day out ended for me when the terraces went, I feel privileged to have experienced the 70's & 80's at the age I was (born in 1960), nothing has ever touched those days for the rush of adrenalin that ran through you when it was on top. I'm no tough nut either, had my share of 2nd prizes back then I was just a game lad that loved the culture and camraderie.

Fu*k me Mr Nice will have a heart attack in th emorning when he reads this little lot

You're right, there were some shit turn outs at odd times, I went Sunderland on the special one year and there were 34 on it, the escort from Seaburn was laughable, even the big lumps took pity on us when the mixed in with us, I asked one of them if we were going to get it and he reply was "nah man, there's not enough of you, you'll be fine", fair play. Still got twatted on that open end though...........

There was a Tuesday night match at Luton that was very lively, pissed down all night as well I think, another fairly empty special meant the walk back to the station was fraught. Not sure if we won or not but Luton were turning cars over and having it with coppers.

Fuck him, if he was around then he knows what it was like and should admit, or he wasn't around. Whichever way you look at it he's a liar.

went to ipswich one year must have been 76/77 and we actually rioted after the game which we narrowly lost. Blues ran all round the ground punching all and sundry including coppers. As others have said we got into a fight most games or were prepared to if we needed to but this one was wild considering how few of us there were and how far from home etc and I went all over back then

on the way home 'we' stopped off to rob various shops/ services for good measure allegedly

coach ran regularly from cheetham hill travel agent on the corner nr crescent rd

Mr Nice might not like it but it was just the way it was

Luton away was very very dodgy, was there the year they came across the pitch at us, City went wild and fought with the coppers to get at them on the pitch, that walk back to the station that day was like a night out in Dodge
