The death of the cobbler - the ultimate proof of consumer society

Whatever happened to ‘invisible mending’ at the Dry Cleaners? Miracle workers they were.
Bloke in Macclesfield indoor market is a genius at repairing, adjusting and all things to do with clothing.

I bought some of the those Redwing 875's about 8 years ago.
I'm still breaking them in. Solid units.
The sole isn't the best (looks the part but wears down relatively quickly) so I had it replaced by a cobbler near Lymm last year. Gave the boots a thorough saddle soap clean and wax and they were like brand new.

Not my pic but pretty much look the same (after new soles were placed on):L

I’ve got a couple of pairs of Redwings, same as that. Danner make a great boot too

Debenhams used to sell excellent quality footwear, so we filled our boots just before they went under. A dank and dreary day when Bury Rock closed it's door for that final time on the 4th May 2021. We still have around twenty pairs remaining, acquisitioned for utter pennies during that dreadful debacle, so have little need of a Cobbler Right Now!

These days It's transitioned into a Range/Iceland store, that's single handedly lowered the tone of the high street to that of a Cockney barrow boys East Enders market stall. The official receivers didn't liquidate the company, but more the greed of the directors that tore it apart limb from limb in a fit of corporate greed. We used to love those escalators.

Most shoes today are of the throw away variety, with needs for new soles diminished. Handy for key cutting though.

My girlfriend was telling me the other day about her grandad who was a cobbler straight after the war, Enfield way, and he worked from his back garden and people in the local community used to come round to have their shoes repaired and there was often a queue.

It’s actually another world.

There’s no way I should be needing to remind you of the rules G……
