The FA Cup Final - if..........

The teams we have struggled to overcome and have occasionally failed against this season are those that have pressed us and challenged for possession deep into our half. I couldn't see any other plan in the offing.
That's it in a nutshell, we didn't play well, but I still don't believe that players didn't try. We were just out played and out thought, and had no idea how to change things.

Once or twice in a season this happens to even the best teams, but its happened way too often this season, and last, and is part of the reason that Mancini was on borrowed time, it appears that he couldn't change things.

If..... we'd bothered to put the effort in we'd have won it

Sad, but true. It's taken me over a week but I have eventually watched a re-run of the game. It's not pretty (and I take nothing away from Wigan) but despite the poorness of our performance we could still have, and should have, won that match. Would we have deserved it, probably not because we were so far below our best, but the fact is, the match was still there for the taking.

If those Pelligrini rumours had not surfaced on cup final day (or at any time before) or if there was nothing to them, MCFC would have another trophy in our cabinet now. If the players thought Bobby was staying come what may, they would have won that game because there would be no upside in for them not doing.

Does anyone think this is true?

Moot point, I'm afraid Pam

I fear that there was more to this than just a press release at the wrong time

I agree with you. But it would have been much harder to justify a sacking if we had just won the FA Cup.
No it wouldn't. Not when even solid players such as Kompany and Milner couldn't stick the manager. He was gone come what may. You can't get rid of 17-18 players in a closed season. The problem was Mancini's.

the main reasons for losing the cup final was to me:he picked the wrong team .Secondly after 10 mins you could tell the only player who was dangerous for them was the right winger Mcmanaman, Mancini should have spotted this and told the players to double up on him and i`m convinced that if you stopped him wigan would have been stopped.Thirdly with wigans injuries he should have known they would play McManaman and done their homework on him which it didn`t look like we did.Fourthly i think Mancini thought he could pick what team he wanted and just turn wigan over.So my conclusion is management fault.

We'd be beat anyone on our day, unfortunately it was Wigans day.
It was a shit day for an end of season review though :(<br /><br />-- Tue May 21, 2013 10:01 pm --<br /><br />We'd be beat anyone on our day, unfortunately it was Wigans day.

City held a board meeting in London on the morning of the cup final, which brought the speculation to fever pitch. Of course it affected the team.

The performance on the pitch was a reflection of the turmoil behind the scenes.

After the Norwich performance. I hate to admit it, But weve turned full circle. The term Typical City as never been so apt.

I just watched the first half again for the first time. I had drank far too much to really take the detail of the game.

The players did try, they huffed and puffed and simply ran out of ideas.

Wigan worked hard to get men behind the ball every time they lost possession and defended the edge of their 18 yard box. We simply could not break this down and we have seen this countless times and opposition managers have used this tactic to combat us on several occasions. Mancini and Platt to blame and should of brought Dzeko and Milner on and changed the dynamics of our forward play.

Tevez was unlucky with the chance he had. He was stretching and tried to reverse the shot and the keeper got the faintest of touches. Only minutes later Tevez blazed over when a simple side footed ball to Aguero and we go one nil up.

If Barry had a right foot he too had a great chance and should of just taken a touch and lashed it home with his right foot just inside the box but instead took an age to get the ball on to his left peg and curled a great back pass into their keepers arms.

The atmosphere for a cup final was shocking and I blame that on the Mancini rumours and the fact that the game was a tense affair.

Mancini and Platt did not do their jobs that day.
