Mark E Smith’s humour was often overlooked, or misunderstood. I’m pretty sure his random wondering across the back of stage at this start of this clip is grounded in Eric Morecambe’s old joke at the end of some of the later Morecambe & Wise shows when he’d be seen wondering around at the back of the stage, prematurely on his way home, in his hat and overcoat, holding a shopping bag. (The original Carry Bag Man?)
