The Farmers Protests in London

So the farmers block streets and cause traffic jams across the capital.
Now I personally agree with their right to protest,
I am just shocked that the people who complained about the Just Stop Oil people causing traffic jams and stopping ambulances are strangley quiet about the farmers, I wonder why that is?
At a guess? Maybe because farmers are hard working folk (I live in a rural area, with farmers as neighbours. And I wouldn't want their job, thanks very much). Whereas the just stop oil mob are perceived (repeat, for the hard of hearing, PERCEIVED) by many as workshy oiks, and that a hard day's graft would kill them.

Once again; "perceived". It's not necessarily my opinion, and other opinions are available.

My guess is because the likes of the daily mail and the express are owned by very wealthy land owners who will be affected by the changes. They've therefore told their readers to be outraged at JSO (since they're also oil & gas investors) and sympathetic to rich farmers.

I feel like your point doesn't make sense here.

Taxes are paid on the wages, buying property etc etc... but if my parents die, i don't buy the house. It just passes to me. So why should it be taxed? If I sell the house etc then fair enough, then pay some tax.

As it is now tax is due when the estate is settled.

I could have 5 massive million pound houses left to me and owe a couple of million in tax, but I may be asset rich and cash poor...

We had this with my Grandads estate. It was roughly 800k in total so tax was due. My dad certainly didn't have enough to just pay the tax outright...

So you sell the asset(s) and pay the tax.

If someone gifts you shares and you sell those shares after making a capital gain then you pay tax on it. If you buy shares at an undervalue, you pay tax on the difference if you sell the shares.

If your father had rented the house out or not occupied it as his main residence and sold it on, capital gains would have been due on the difference between value at time of probate and sale.

It's not a burden to pay tax on inheriting a large estate, it's a privilege most people don't have.

Errr - That's what they said, "If I sell the house then fair enough pay some tax" - the problem is the tax is due even if the house isn't sold and for example he moves in. The tax us due when the estate value is settled and that can be very unfair.

It's the same for everyone else who pays inheritance tax. In fact farmers actually get an extended period.

If you want to keep the house then get a mortgage.

Or maybe just sell it and buy a smaller house.

Why should we have to cut public services because you have decided you are entitled not to pay tax until you've sold an asset that you didn't buy or earn?

It is fair. If you don't like it go and live in a tax haven.

I fail to see why this is unfair and people who work long hours grafting on low wages is fair.
