The 'finisher' argument

Is Firmino a finisher? Jesus has scored more goals than him, for Barzil as well. We scored 168 goals last season and are the only team with over 100 goals this season. Our problem is mental now, not inability to finish.

But this is the problem, isn't it? In relation to the amount of chances we create, we should have scored a lot more! If we had done that, we would have won more games.

Our finishing is appalling, end of story.

The amount of points lost this season because of it is embarrassing, it's a big problem and just as much a problem as the inability to defend.

Amazing stats ... we're in the 300's for shots, and next best is in the 100's. But we're 22 points off the pace.

And over the whole season, Liverpool have had the fewest shots/chances of any of the top-4 teams, but have won (almost) every game !

Don't know what to make of that !

This is the real reason why we are so far behind. If you look at the following in isolation:

Spurs Home - draw - should have been a win +2 points
Norwich away - lost should have been a win 3 points - they had 3 shots on goals
Newcastle - draw - should have been a win, 3 shots on goal is all they had.+2 points
Palace - draw +2 points again something like 3 or 2 shots on goal.
Wolves home - lost but they had nothing all game should have been a draw +1
Liverpool away - should have been a draw +1 - 2 for them now.
Spurs away - +3 points

Now Wolves away even though we we were winning they did have more shots and possession, United home they actually had more shots on target than us. So if I’m being harsh and say ok those two in the balance we have lost. Either way we should have lost 2 max.

That’s a 16 point swing and also is saying Liverpool only deserved to drop 2 points against us and didn’t deserve to drop any against anyone else which we know is not true!

So on play/luck/var we really we should be 6 points behind - same as last season really.

It has just been a perfect storm against us. Injuries, bad finishing a few individual errors compounded by our inability to finish and getting screwed by VAR and the FA. On the other hand Liverpool have been clinical, ridden their luck (don’t think they have had 3 games where the opponents have scored with every shot on goal!) had VAR go in their favour and no injuries. They’ve also chickened out of the League Cup and tried their best to do the same for the FA Cup.

It’s sickening as they will probably smash all the records but we know they are not as good as us on the day or as a pure footballing team. It is just so frustrating. We’ll be back though and this is why on the whole I’m not worried. A few tweaks and we’ll show them who the real champs are.

seems bizarre that a team that has over 100 goals so far this season we are talking about finishers

It does, yes. One factor is the number of big wins among those 100 goals. Against weaker opposition, and particularly when we score early, we often get a bag full.

Some of it seems to be a confidence thing. If we don’t score early, we frequently labour. Last year, IIRC, we struck early on many occasions. Even when we didn’t, you could almost guarantee patience would pay off. We were masters at scoring late match-winners.

We are also missing a peak Merlin. How many times over the years has be been the one to unpick a defence?

To me it’s some combination of form, confidence and hunger. We have the players.

The diagnosis is obvious: Sterling's goals have dried up.

The solution is also obvious. In fact we have two solutions:

Jesus, and or Sane.

City are a bit like Liverpool in that we have a none goalscoring midfield but their front 3 are all in outstanding form. Our wide forwards are not scoring many goals at the moment.

You can see why Pep kept playing Sterling as the Real Madrid tie was pending. You need your big players in these games.

The decision making in the box has gone to shit and we are guilty sometimes of over-playing the ball when the opportunity arises to pull the trigger - Arsenal were once guilty of this under Wenger a few years back

It would be interesting if anyone could pull up the stats to show where we would be if Aguero was not around this season
