The FOC thread.

From early memories of washing day (Mondays) we had a big metal tub in the kitchen with a wooden thing for pushing the clothes under the hot water, think it was called a pauncher, sometimes replaced by young me in bare feet.

Edit: learned one day in junior school that the Ancient Romans used urine in their laundries but my mam wasn't keen on letting me re-create the experience.

my missus still wants to do that :)

My mam used to go round to her friend's house for a chat. If she thought "too many" lights were on, she'd get up from her chair and switch them off. She used to do the same in later years when she visited my or my brother's house.

We just got used to it and let her do it.

First serious girlfriend, her folks would go off to bed and remind her to unplug the telly and, I think, any floor lamps around, whatever the weather. We would occasionally take advantage of this moment of freedom to get up to things on their carpet (don't bother to ask for photos, it's so far back they'd be sepia tinted anyway) and sometimes forget.

There was a genuine risk and still is a risk with a landline, it's rare but it can happen. Nobody unplugs their TV anymore when there is an electrical storm surely?
To save me the arsehole of typing it out on my phone I've copied and pasted from AI ..this is fact not made up shit... I always do it, we have some humdinger storms here in the tropics !!

Yes, it's a good idea to unplug your TV during a storm, especially if you're expecting lightning. Unplugging your TV can protect it from power surges caused by lightning strikes, which can damage the device. While surge protectors can offer some protection, they are not foolproof and a powerful surge could still bypass them.

Reasons to unplug:
  • Protection from power surges:
Lightning can induce powerful electrical currents in power lines, which can travel to your TV and damage its components.

  • Surge protectors are not perfect:
While surge protectors can help, they are not always able to handle a direct lightning strike.

  • Safety:
Unplugging also removes the risk of electrical shock from a lightning strike.
What to unplug:
  • Unplug the TV from the wall outlet.

  • If your TV has an antenna cable, unplug that as well.

  • Consider unplugging other electronics as well, such as computers, gaming consoles, and other appliances.
When to unplug:
  • During thunderstorms: If you see lightning or hear thunder, it's best to unplug your devices.
  • Before a storm: If you know a storm is approaching, take the precaution of unplugging your electronics.

Lots of shit can kill you where you live, but at least the weather is nice mate ;-)

Mu

Muffin the mule was a kids favorite back in the day, now it carries a custodial sentence!!
I met the woman who did Muffin in a hotel bar in Wilmslow many years ago. She engaged me in conversation on the basis that she was famous and I must know who she was. ( I didn’t and had to deduce who she was from her ramblings.) She was pissed and complaining that the Beeb had let her down by discontinuing the prog some years before.

I'm sure her name was Annette Mills. She was in fact the sister of the famous actor/film star John Mills. It seems that the Beeb had turned her into a real dipso by cancelling her meal ticket.

Fuck me she died in 1955 mate, you've got a cracking memory for a FOC :)

The memory is fading now but I seem to remember going on holiday to
Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katsanellabogen-by-the-sea.
That young man who kissed a girl ‘unexpectedly’ would be charged with sexual assault these days.
We had that on a 78, along with "Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen," and "Davy, Davy Crockett".

We played them so often that I probably still know them word for word.

We didn’t have many records.
