The people have spoken.

Only 1 in 4 of the electorate voted for Dave

I know it's the way the system works, but it's still quite mind boggling

Apparently it was mentioned on the BBC's coverage this morning that in 2011 the public were asked if they wanted to change the "First Past The Post" system, for a fairer system such as "Proportional Representation" and it was rejected out of hand.

Now I can't ever remember being asked.

Farage resigns!

The big issue for UKIP now is how many of those 4 million would vote UKIP again now that Farage, their only known face, has gone and a referendum on Europe will prob be held.

I would suspect and I am only guessing that there share of the vote will have collapsed by the next election
He's not gone, he's standing down as leader.

After the summer he's putting hs name forward as leader of the party. Essentially he's asking is party members "Do you still want me in charge? Here's your chance to have your say".

You can't start complaining about the rules of the game after your team lost.

Cameron didn't just win this fair and square, he won it with a 6-1 thrashing and cries of change from the red side. The people wanted 5 years of a Tory Government and that's what they voted for.

He won with 36.8% of the electorate. How is that one in four?

It doesn't matter, the distribution of seats makes it over 50% to majority control Parliament. People in this country vote for local MP's to make up a Parliament, not the leaders or their parties. The Conservatives have secured a controlling amount of seats because the electorate has voted for Conservative MP's by the majority.

Nope. Not a chance Labour will have more seats than the Tories.

Mind if I quote you?
Anyone seen Big Joe?

lets be gracious. be glad our future is more secure, thats enough reward.

Agreed - we should all just be happy that our future is more secure - even for those that do not realise it.

We should not look to score points. I was just talking to my wife about how we can be confident now that the mortgage rates will now stay healthy with a legion of other economic factors - but this forum now needs to get back to uniting against the real red enemy.

66% turn out, of which Dave received 36%, so only one in four of people who were eligible to vote, voted for the Conservatives

And you're admitting that?

Again I will repeat it's virtually unheard of for an incumbent government to be booted out in the first election the reality is that whilst I disagree with some Tory policy they had not reached the point that Brown and Major reached, they are still unpopular in the North of the country and this should be a wake up call to them,
Wake up call? Seeing as the 'closest election in history' has resulted in a Conservative majority, I think it's Labour who need to wake up.
They failed because Ed moved them, or tried to, to the left, to appease the likes of Mcluskey of the unions. Blair realised years ago that this was not the type of politics England favoured, so his new Labour managed to win three on the trot, and even now, some Labour supporters fail to grasp this, still believing a leftist government is what the people want. They never have, and, hopefully, never will.

Great post. Maybe I'm being too simplistic but Labour could still get a lot of voters back onside in the future without having to veer too far to the left. Most people in this country these days are moderately left, centre, or moderately right of centre and have no appetite for politics that is too far to the left or right. Whoever thought Labour could get the populist vote by reverting back to socialist ideals in this day and age is deluded. They picked the wrong Milliband to lead their party in 2010.

It's been like that for ages
