The grand strategy gaming thread

Recently bought CIV4 from the humble bundle. Struggling to get into it.

Command & Conquer red alert 2 and Tiberian Sun.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a classic, simple and very addictive.

Interesting. Did you ever play HoI3? And if so what makes you prefer 2? I think I got the old one bundled when I bought Hoi3 but never tried it. I love Hearts of Iron and wait in anticipation for the next. Paradox makes some quality strategy games (Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron).

If its your first Civ it will take some time getting into. Much more slow paced than C&C which IMHO isn't strategy but more of a tactics game really. Now HoMM3 is a terminal disease which I'd really prefer not to think about. Tried the WOG mod yet? Epic.

I did, but found HoI2 more engrossing, and considering it's been available for so much longer, had many more mods available. I could be miles out, but the impression I got from HoI3 is it sacrificed detail for better visuals.

Crusader Kings 2 is on sale and under £10 on Steam.

£23 including all DLC is an absolute bargain.

I've been playing EU4 since Wealth of Nations came out a few days back but CK2 is still an amazing game and for that price is an absolute steal

On my shelf, sorry long post

Hearts of Iron 3
XCOM - OK for one run through but not a patch on replayability of the original
Crusader Kings 2 - need to pick that up again after reading this thread
Blood Bowl - fun for a kick about, orcs, elves, dwarves, goblins etc playing American football
FM2014 - always get bored after a few seasons in
All the Total War games - personally I think this series peaked at Medieval TW II
Fallout New Vegas - RPG/1st person shooter
Panzer Corps - iPad (refresh of 1990's Panzer General)
Battle of the Bulge - iPad
Baldur's Gate - iPad

and then, the most complex games I have ever played (treated myself on my birthday) - for dedicated wargamers only. Old school counter hex based wargames with NATO symbols for units on the counters.

Gary Grigsby's War in the East and
Gary Grigsby's War in the Pacific (Admirals Edition) - WitP

Not cheap at $60, import from USA, although you do get a personalised DVD with your name on the disc - that's pretty cool and goes to show how few they sell. Had them for 3 months now and I've got to about turn 25 in War in the East and Turn 15 in WitP - I think I need to retire to play these properly (or a lottery win).

Each has a 300 page manual that you do need to read and understand, you can blag it for a while but there's just too much you need to know from the manuals.

Both have smaller scenarios but the 'big' scenario for War in the East is Hitler's invasion of Russia where you command down to regimental level (German)/Brigade level (Russian). Around 2000 counters per side although Russia eventually gets a lot more. A player-made tutorial covering the first turn for War in the east was a PDF with 270+ pages (lots of screenshots mind).

The big scenario for WitP you command every boat (including transport, oilers, tankers, cargo ship), plane squadron & battalion level land unit across the whole of the pacific/India/US West Coast. Some play by email (PBEM) games, (only way to take on another person) have been known to last 3 years real-time !!!!!! I was completely lost on starting WitP so downloaded an excel spreadsheet containing the first turn moves for the allies, 1 week later, approximately 24+ hours entering unit commands and after running through 4500 lines of the spreadsheet I was ready to hit the end turn button for the 1st turn :-)

For strategy nuts, especially wargame types, take a look at the Paradox and Matrix Games websites:

Brilliant post mate. I had never heard about the Grigsby games. Would make Hearts of Iron look like tetris I reckon. But as you say, to start playing those beasts would mean retirement from all work and social life. Tempting though :-)

Heads-up to all you TB 4X gamers. The new game Endless Legend is brilliant. Built on the CIV foundation but with sufficient new game mechanics to make it fresh and interesting. And it looks pretty as well. Good reviews all around. I could go into more details but that would mean less gaming time so no - just got it yesterday ;-)
