The great queue of '99

I remember thinking i'd got there early and as i approached the kippax entrance, I saw everyone dissapearing inside and thought not long now, only to then have to spend all day shuffling inside the North Stand.

Well worth it.

I think some must have stayed overnight, the amount of rubbish around the ground.
So Gareth Taylor and Tony Vaughan were there as well then?

Gulp; it's a horrible memory!

I got there at 9:30 having told wifey I'd be two/three hours at most, joined the queue half way round the ground (not realising it was already snaking INSIDE the ground as well). Three hours later I was just about approaching the ground entrance. No food, luckily some water and met a good group of blokes (I was queuing with five STs having volunteered to get them for everyone (fool!)).

I remember the graffiti: "Has the Titanic crossed the Atlantic yet?" etc.

Felt really sorry for a lad I was with, a student in Nottingham, who'd taken the day off to get tickets; after about 6/7 hours he mumbled something I didn't catch and went off. It was only when someone said something I realized he'd had to go back, couldn't wait any longer. If I'd realized, I'd have got his tickets for him and posted them on or met him at Wembley. Often wondered if he made it, poor sod.

In the end, I was just in a trance like state and eventually got the tickets at 9pm, 11½ hrs later. I was worried the TO staff might pack up, strike or whatever just as I got there.

Also recall some tosser city fans leaping the barriers and getting straight to the head of the queue just before we got there. Security didn't stop them, but let's face Bernard Halford wasn't renowned for top quality organization, was he? ;0)

All worth it in the end, though; as a bloke said who got into our train carriage on the way back from Wembley: "Did I just dream that, or did City REALLY come back from two down with less than a minute to go?".

Without doubt, one of the best days of my life (Wembley, not the queuing!).

I left it until 12-30 to get there thinking the worst of the queue would have gone, saw the end of the queue just reaching the Platt Lane stand and thought "that's not too bad" - didn't realise until I got closer to the TO that the queue went back from the TO, through the North Stand, into the Kippax forecourt and back round outside the ground towards the Platt Lane!! Got my tickets about 11-45pm.

We queued from midnight with deck chairs etc... That long ago I cant remember much, just the ticket office opening and those that had bikes and tents got left behind. haha

PS: Great post.
