I have faint memories of it, water shortages and all that

Had you already developed Alzheimers by then?

Sorry, I had to :)

I was just about to say something similar.

I got sunstroke in Blackpool,FUCKING BLACKPOOL.
I now live in Australia and I've never had it here,we went swimming in the River Medlock at Daisy Nook as Ashton Baths was packed.

I got it in Newquay - was really ill for days. I still don't like being in the sun 38 years later.

Mum and Dad would have been answering to Child Services nowadays!

I remember the save water stickers behind the taps and all over the walls in the cloakroom at school.

Fond memories. I was 7 and me and my mates spent many days in Brookdale Park and cycled to Heaton Park regularly. We took water bottles everywhere to quench our thirst - which seemed like every 10 minutes. Played loads of footy, but only in short spells due to the temperature. People talked in the street about the heat, as mobile phones were a development still out of reach for the masses. Fairy liquid bottle water fights were commonplace as long as you had a good source of water. I remember getting a few bollockings as there was a hosepipe ban at the time.

Sunbathing on the top of our shed roof became a regular thing, although I can't remember using any sunscreen as it wasn't something that was stocked in our local shop. Vinegar may have been the substitute. The days seem to go much slower and the nights were pretty stifling. As a kid you didn't need to do anything specific during the day, you could just laze around watching the world go by. I was a bit too young for my hormones to be raging, but I still remember girls on the streets and in gardens wearing bikinis and skimpy cotton most of the time. Oh...and ladybirds...everywhere.

Hottest ever, recall seeing on the news where in the Lake District they were all drying up and a hidden village appeared in one of them!
I was 13 and the school were strict on uniform. We had to wear blazers and everyone was complaining. The head teacher said the day the umpire (there was some England cricket series on) allows players to walk out not wearing their jumpers, then we could leave the blazers at home.
A week or so later that happened and we were able to come to school minus the blazer until the end of term.

Mardale - it was submerged when they built a dam to increase the size of Haweswater for the benefit of all you Mancs! Haweswater all but dried up completely a few years later - 83 or 84 - and I went up there with my Grandad who worked on a farm there for a time in the depression. He used to cycle about 25 miles to get there then work all week, sleeping in a hay loft, before cycling back on Friday night. There wasn't a lot left of it as I think they demolished all the buildings, but there was a small bridge left in place and he could remember other buildings from the location of their foundations.

I remember driving all the way to cornwall in the middle of it.Only been driving for about 5 months and had a VW Beetle, noticed a load of cars pulling over on the motorway cos of overheating but my little beetle just kept going, some 6 or 7 hours later got to the campsite and forgot where to pick the key up from and had to phone the owners. When we unpacked i noticed that my brand new battery shaver(i was only 18) had melted in the back of the car.It was just like paradise for those 2 weeks down there.

That was the year I discovered self abuse.

Being a catholic at the time I was struck down by a bolt of lightning.

It was also the summer of England vs West Indies and Tony Grieg's infamous "grovel" comments.

I was at OT that Saturday evening when Holding and Roberts, backed by thousands of West Indies fans banging their tins, unleashed one of the most violent and intimidating bowling spells ever at Edrich and Close.

I was born in 74 so being only 2 at the time I don't remember it but I do have either a manufactured memory or an actual memory of being at the galleon in Cheadle (the outdoor pool). We apparently spent pretty much every day there. Dad would finish work early then we'd all head over there.
