The heatwave of 1976

I remember the Jubly ice lollies, they certainly came in handy during 1976.

I also had a Chopper bike and customised it by buying a " raw power" appliance that you attached to it, which made it sound like a motorbike.

On a Saturday it was on tv Grandstand, Dad's Army, Generation Game, Starsky and Hutch. Match of the Day then Parkinson. A good saturday nights tv.

Excellent.

If I had a quid for every time I'd mentioned that word, only to be met by a blank stare. I stopped using it as I thought it may have just popped into my head from a dream.

Jublies were great. At school in the 70s we used to have jubly eating competitions at lunchtime to see how fast someone could eat/drink one from hard frozen.

By 1976 I was in the 6th form, and my jubly eating days were behind me.
I knew a girl in school that could suck one that hard that the colour drained from it in seconds, and all that was left was a huge block of ice.

*that also may have just popped into my head from a dream.

I was 7 and we had a family holiday camping in Cornwall. I remember thinking it was hot. That december we moved to Singapore and I discovered what hot was really like!

You think you might be dreaming?

Preferred 'ice poles' myself, at one time you could only get those that were about 4 inches long then they brought out those whoppers twice the size and loads of different flavours, of course those blue ones were favourite, ain't got a clue what flavour they were supposed to be though

My Mam after finding how much Lilly from the corner shop was charging for Vimto cups went into the ice lolly business, she used our very little used freezer and turned a tidy profit making them and selling them for 2p less;although Lily saw her arse and withdrew tick from her.

My parents gambled on buying a guest house in the April and virtually cleaned up in their first season. As for me, well it was all about sun, sea, sand and beautiful blonde foreign students and golden sandy beach no more the fifty yards from the front door.

I guess many of the younger members on here don't remember the summer of 76. We'd beaten Newcastle in the February with goals from Tueart and Barnes plus great performances from Royle, Doyle, Watson etc. From then on the sun just kept on shining and for June and July it was in the 80's for about a month, it was unbelievable.

On the telly we had Reggie Perrin, When the Boat Comes in and Swap shop. At the cinema it was One flew over the cuckoos nest, All the Presidents Men, Taxi Driver and Rocky. House Prices were on average £12k, petrol 76p a gallon, inflation 16% and interest rates 14%. Carter had replaced Gerard Ford as President in the US and Harold WIlson had handed over to Jim Callaghan.

Musically it was Rod Stewart, Elton, Queen, Abba, Bruce, Eagles and Fleetwood Mac in the charts plus ELO. However Punk was arriving in the form of Anarchy in the UK from the Pistols and New Rose from the Damned.

CIty were steadily improving the team and a couple of years later we should have won the league but finished runners up to Liverpool.

However apart from a trophy for City the standout feature of 76 was the incredible weather. Any other blues with memories of that year !!!

I was 19 in 1976.

My Brother saw David Bowie at Wembley, whilst I had to trudge up and over Wasdale Head, Great Gable and Scarfell Pike, best part of 30 miles, for work.

Happy memories, loads of drinking, a bit of shagging, work was fantastic. I didn't live at home earning good money for the time with no commitments. Saw many bands of the era.

If I could go back in time via a time machine it would be to 1973-1979 the halcyon years of Mr Ed.....

I was installing a ventilation system at Bass Charrington, Runcorn.

Sheer fucking misery

Britain isn't set up for hot weather theres no relief

My last ever holiday in Wales at Golden gate Towyn, with my two sisters and various friends we had with us in an old 8 berth caravan.
After that crazy holiday i then went back to Catterick ready to be posted to Osnabruck.
Superb summer never to be forgotten.
