Already we're seeing the price of nanny services increase and my friendly Polish builder has so much work on he's struggling to fit an upgrade to my orangery. We'll soon see the price of Pret increase and prices in my local Waitrose will no doubt follow.


For what? For your "sovrinty"? (I spell it wrongly because Leavers are so stupid). All that will happen is that we'll pay the working classes more and they will spend it on large TV's and other rubbish and still all be racist.


What a mess you've caused and I'm going to have to pay. I sat my daughter down last night and told her that her riding lessons would need to be cancelled, I said blame it on Brexit and Leave voters. She cried herself to sleep.

For those who live near Hyde and need fuel , morrisons has plenty and no Q . But don't be a twat a just call in for a few liters or especially those who would take plastic containers just to be a **** please stay away

Absolutely and sudden inflation of a part of it affects other areas. If the changes are too severe then the ripple effect down the line could cause huge issues.

If food and energy prices go up 50%, how are people on the breadline meant to manage?

Whose proposing 20% would be added to food? It would be nothing like that. Tesco announced a £1.7 BILLION profit last year. You think they can't pay their suppliers and HGV drivers slightly more to stabilise their supply chains? If Tesco pass on these costs to their customers a smarter brand will undercut them.

Pure corporate greed has lead to this and HGV drivers deserve their fair share of all these profits.
 
The problem with HGV driver recruitment is not down to just wages it's not attractive to younger people who much prefer jobs that are office based
 
I think more should be made of the fact that becoming an HGV driver helps to make your dreams of being a serial killer closer to reality in their next recruitment drive.

You can pay drivers more. The issue is there aren’t enough drivers to pay more money too. If the finite pool of labour is diverted to driving trucks, you will create a shortage somewhere else.

The UK has an overall shortage of labour. Most Western economies have a shortage of labour. This shortage has to be addressed and the method chosen by the UK is for the shortages in the labour market to be driven and set by the Govt. Quotas, visas, etc.

The Govt is bad at predicting or addressing labour shortfalls because their focus is the political impact of foreign labour rather addressing the economic necessity or problem at hand. They will wait problems out for as long as possible in the hope someone, somewhere can address them without tapping into foreign labour and if that doesn’t work they will do something begrudgingly, which will always be too little, too late.

This is why we will always get these ‘mini-crisis’. Fruit pickers, care workers, truck drivers, whatever. We are trying to run a our economy as if it was still plugged into the EU infrastructure and pretending everything will be fine.

Yes, Covid and Brexit have disturbed the equilibrium. Market economies have a remarkable ability to bounce back from these setbacks. There will always be faults and foibles but readjustment this time will be slow, I fear. Times will be tough for those on low incomes. Some intervention in energy prices may be currently warranted. Worth noting however that current (and future) green policies already push up energy prices. The EU have amply demonstrated how interference in food markets is disastrous.
If you wish to live in a liberal democracy, you have to accept a market based economy, with some gov intervention to mitigate problems that the market doesn't cope with.
If you prefer a command economy, you have to accept pretty much totalitarian government.

Exactly. It's a forgotten industry that's been allowed to rot. Everyone wants what they want and they want it now at the cheapest possible price so that has contributed to low wages and long hours.

I fell into HGV work and liked it but I can see why many wouldn't consider it. Your average HGV job even with better pay won't attract youngsters because your average HGV job has you working long , ,unsociable hours and asks you to be 'flexible' which means sleep in your truck if required.

You also have to be very comfortable in your own company, not much work bantz, work get together and certainly no nice looking girls to chase on a work night out.

Who knows what the eventual figure will be. Prices have already gone up quite a lot.

Some prefer office jobs many don't. No one said it was just wages the other downsides have been discussed. You could also throw in automation mate as it doest appear to have a big future.

My disappointment is that you would think because of the virus people would have finally realised that some jobs deserves a bit more credit and reward. There are a number of these but drivers are currently in the news.

I find it rather depressing that others are still more concerned with their lot and are selfish enough that they would begrudge someone a bit more money.

They will try and justify it in their own minds or make laughable simplistic arguments but we don't all fall for it.

If you are not willing to drag others up don't be surprised if you get dragged down yourself. Whinging about Xmas and fuel is quite amusing mind.

This was the point I was trying to make, rather than take it out on lorry drivers.

We‘re in for a really rough winter if price trends continue the way they are.

Ideally I’d want better conditions and pay(that rises above the cost of living) for every single job.

The lorry driving issue will push up the cost of living and that will make times even harder for the poorest section of society. Supermarkets won’t lessen their profits voluntarily.
 
The second mr k was a lorry driver , he loved it , in truth though he was a bit of a loner, always packed his food and brought him one of those early portable telly things , he liked sleeping out in the lorry , if he did as he turned out to be a cheat , didnt murder anyone that i know of though

We have fucked ourself with brexit and other things , the gov has been told for months this would happen but did nowt and now have to react to another crisis instead of getting ahead of it , as usual

I've known a few drivers lead other lives behind there wives/girlfriends backs whilst out tramping for weeks on end.

Suppose having that freedom is a perk to some. Takes all kinds I suppose. Joking aside him being that way would suggest he's a bit of a twat and it couldn't have been nice finding out.
