It would take something seismic to happen too, which isn't likely.

The ex-Conservatives will still support the government on some matters, and only finance bills matter in terms of forcing a GE.

Agree. Although Heidi Allen actually abstained on a confidence matter with the last budget. I didn't realise that until today, that's quite extraordinary behaviour.

So genuine question. Will these breakaway MP’s resign their positions since they can no longer carry out the job they were mandated to do representing the party their constituents voted for ?

If not, why not ?
They won't, as technically their constituents voted for them as individuals and not the parties they were part of.

No, because it's not an accurate statement.

They can still perform every act they were elected to do.

No - as i said remainers are largely politically homeless and there are at least 16m of us. That stance is exactly what they want to adopt - a genuine alternative. Also factor in the sh!t show that both main parties are about to serve up and barring a huge turnaround from both main parties they can only profit across the next 8 weeks.

What about the Lib Dems? That's why I'm sceptical about that working, there was a party that went into the election on that platform and did badly. Now I accept the new shiny toy might well do much better, but I struggle to see much evidence that there's a latent vote out there for such a line.

Depends what their aim is really. If they see a long term future as a viable centrist party in government, they'll be worried about the single issue tag. If they simply want to put pressure on the Tories and Labour to counteract the disproportionate influence UKIP/the ERG and Momentum are having on both parties' policies by threatening to siphon away their votes and hold the balance of power, with the long term aim of returning to the fold when the extremists have less influence, then single issue won't be a big problem.

Fair yes. I am presuming they wish to be elected next time around though.

That’s what I don’t really understand either. They were elected under the manifesto (presumably) of the party they were working for. It’s crazy they can just resign from the party but keep their position as MP.

Also they aren’t officially working even for a party, it’s an independent group. They are making a protest, seemingly, against the wrongs in both their parties (that’s a good thing) but are they still being paid for by that party? It’s very strange.

Why don’t they just form a party that is pro remain? Surely that is the only way they could make significant change and give constituents an alternative? Although we’d need a GE.
