The team may have progressed onto greaty things, but they were beaten in the FA cup final by villa the same year as the crash. Maybe the like arsenal, a couple more years or whatever.
On the same note, it was recently the anniversary of the torino teams plane crash disater. All the team, except a goalkeeper who was injured so didn't travel, died. They were winning things and were rated, at the time, as one of the best sides in europe.
I can never understand why there isn't as much attention paid to these great players, and this terrible event.
Without looking it up, I'm not sure of all the facts regarding that Torino team but I think I'm right in saying that it contained virtually the whole Italian national side, had won something like 3 Italian league titles on the bounce and was well on its way to winning a 4th at the time of the crash. I'm not trying to play down how good the Busby Babes were but by all accounts the Torino team was arguably even better as it was totally dominating Italian football at the time of the disaster whereas the United side of the 1950's was pretty well matched by the Wolves team of that era.
Bearing all this in mind, it does seem odd why it doesn't get as much coverage of M*nich - even in Italy, the media don't seem to make as big a deal of it as the media do over here regarding M*nich. I think there are various reasons - the Torino crash happened in 1949 well before European football came into being so may not have got as much coverage at the time. I also heard that as most of the team comprised Italian internationals, it was seen as a bit of an embarrassment in Italy in that it totally decimated their national side so they don't make as big an issue out of it as they might. Finally, Torino as a club doesn't whore themselves around the world off the back of the disaster unlike our friends down the road.
