My dad, now seventy and a lifelong Blue, also reckons that Edwards was the best outfield player he's ever seen (he would put Trautmann alongside him in terms of ability). I think there's no doubt he was a great player, and he probably would still have been in the England side in 1966.
The crash had a big effect on England's hopes in the 1958 World Cup. In addition to Edwards, the team had lost Roger Byrne, the first choice left back, and Tommy Taylor, its centre forward, both by all accounts also outstanding players.
I don't think there's any doubt that the Busby babes would have gone on to more domestic success over the following seasons given their quality and the relative youth of the team. Given the quality of the Real Madrid side of that era, they'd have had a harder job dominating Europe, but it doesn't seem fanciful to suggest that they may have won the European Cup at least once as well.
