I'm going to bid farewell to this thread now, but it has been an interesting debate and, unusually for bluemoon, has stuck to geopolitical argument rather than depressing sectarian mud-slinging.
Suffice to say I'm over in Northern Ireland - a stunning, beautiful and undiscovered part of the world, by the way - visiting relatives next month and it is a significantly more pleasant and stress-free experience nowadays than it used to be 20 or 30 years ago. And long may that continue.
In the words of Captain Sensible, "Im Glad It's All Over"

May the sun shine on your back.

ooops its may the sun rise to meet you (my fault, mams from dublin :)

May the road rise to meet you.
May the shine warm upon your face.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the rain fall soft upon your fields..
And until we meet again may God hold you
in the palm of his hand.
TY lovely words

mammulty,
as someone who has lived through the troubles i can say what you were told is bullshit in comparison to actually seeing someone die as a result of the IRA.
i will never forget the day my mother came home saying a transit van driving down a road near the docks was stopped in the middle of the road by a fella. then 3 lads ran from the side street with a machine gun and gunned down the 5 occupants, 4 of which were catholics and 2 brothers, their crime?? doing a hard days work packing boxes on ships. my mother was working in one of the local factories and as a nurse was one of the first on the scene and had to hold one of the brothers hands while he slipped away with his last words being 'tell my wife and daughter i love them' he was 26 and his new born was 5 weeks old.

remember that next time you hear bullshit from your admirers.

I think since the Good Friday argeement there has been a huge change in the North and all for the good. Can we not talk about the good things that have happend since the Good Friday argeement. Yes both sides have killed a number of people over the years time to look at the positive than go over what has happend in the past. For the N Irish blues that lived up there during the trobles none of us will ever know how bad the trobles were and how people survived just doing day to day stuff during that time. I think those people that seen all the heartache over those years would never want to see that ever happening again.

Shady hit the nail on the head ...

my mate is currently still being treated for wounds that were inflicted in a road side bomb some 15 years ago...he still has shrapnel in his back and sleeps only 3hrs max a day due to pain.

he bleeds internally on a daily basis and his drugged up to his eyeballs...hes 36 yr old ffs

when his wife & kids go on holiday he has to stay at home as he cant travel by car or plane for long distances.

he has missed out on so much of thier lifes and all for a paltry basic squaddie medical discharge pension

i'm sure he really would like to thank the ira for their input

Spot on ... the only thing to think about ... anything else is more of the shit that leads to war.

But when you look clearly at the IRA as a fighting force, it's hard not to have some respect.

There is no way you can have respect for anyone who does business like this. They are killing people! Yes, and most nations do. Add fekn idiots and you have dead people.

Bad culture ...

You know I get stick from lads here cos I watch the 'foreign' game ... children speaking ... it is a fukn sport you donkey!

The more sport we play the less people we kill. Simples.

Peace! Bluemoon rising!

30 years of death and destruction, over 3000 lives lost, billions of pounds wasted and we end up with a united ireland further away than it ever was and sinn fein as british ministers

Agree though my best mates dad was an active member. I despise them but it's impossible to say how I'd have reacted given the same circumstances. Still think they are cunts though.

I'm probably gonna bow out of the thread here before I get a ban though.

Fairly is all I will say. I've had heated "debates" with him over the years. He comes across as a top bloke but having lost someone dear to an IRA roadside bomb, I can't bring myself to have any grudging respect for the cowardly way they conducted their "war".

As I say, I really should bow out before I lose my cool as it's not worth it. No ones opinions are going to be changed on this thread and I enjoy BM too much to get a ban over an emotive thread.

I will say I have undying respect for the paras that went in to do a job they were not trained for. The paras are not a police force and 51 normal working class blokes lost their life over there doing a job for fucks sake. They were not their through their ideology. Fuck it I'm off.
